Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, by Neil Sedaka was everyone’s favorite break up song in 1964

March 18, 1964, Wednesday. Wonder if we are through for good.

Had to take the Station Wagon to school. Wasn’t as hot as yesterday. If it’s hot tomorrow, we’re ditching and going to the beach. I still love Howard, but when I think of him being 20 and me 16, I don’t know about that. He seems to old for me. Do you think we’ll make up Saturday. I sure hope it’s hot and he’s at the beach. Or, I hope Dave Kendal broke up with Sandy and will ask me out. I love him, he’s so cute. I think he likes me a little bit too. If Howard and I don’t make up, I’m going to ask Dave to the Hula Hop. Sure hope he won’t be going steady by then. Mom and Dad haven’t written. They needed this trip. They haven’t been away from us kids for a real vacation our whole lives and Mommy suffered a lot when Mayme died last year.

Amazing how I could say I’m in love with Howard one minute the next be in love with Dave.  I remember thinking, I had to have a another guy in my back pocket, before breaking up with anyone.
