A little Black Baby Doll, for my Saffron friend’s Sweet 16

September 20, 1964, Sunday. Dianne Block’s Sweet 16 Party.

I almost didn’t get to go because mom and dad are in terrible moods. They didn’t want me to use my car today, or all week. Mom is like she use to be…vicious! Donna and I gave Dianne a colored Baby Doll, because her club name is “Buckwheat” and she loved it!. The party was at her grandmother’s house. All her Jewish relatives were there. Sandy said she saw Howard last night and he’s not engaged! Vicki Varlatta saw Dave at Manhattan Beach. I was sitting at home last night while all the fun was happening. Tonight I made a pink skirt from a Simplicity Pattern, on the Singer Sewing Machine. My favorite song is “Baby Love.” I cry when I hear it because I think of Byron.

We all adored “The Little Rascals” and Buckwheat was Dianne Block’s Club name, because she had the darkest tan of anyone.  Mine was Barbie Doll, because of all my clothes and my long ponytail.
