I guess I expect guys to be my slave, or I treat them rotten.

April 8, 1964, Wednesday. Glad I saw Dave, now he’ll tell Howard

Was real hot, should have ditched today. Boring day. After school came home. Mommy was in a bad mood and so was I. Linda came over and told me Pam told her Howard said he could treat me rotten, cause that’s how I treat him. Lauri and I went over to the boys across the street, than went up to Mc Donalds to get them some food. I saw Dave, the guy who lives across from Lew. We talked, I wish I could have asked him what Howard said about me, but didn’t ask. Told him he better tell his friends to come to the Saffron dance. He wants to ask me out. Patty Rodriguez and Marilyn were there. The boy’s from across the street came over tonight, but I looked ugly and didn’t care, (because I’m not interested in them.)

I think the 1950’s didn’t end until 1965.  I was still using old fashioned relationship values, where girls were supposed to be worshiped.  In the next 5 years, women’s roles would change as feminism began to grow.  I grew up on Doris Day movies and modeled my dreams of the future after them.  Boy was I going to be in for a sorry ride.
