My new Step-Grandmother was turning me into a Witch!

August 12, 1964, Wednesday. Saw “Marnie” and “Doctor Strangelove at the Loyola Theater in Westchester with Bonnie C.

My Horoscope said there would be an inharmonious atmosphere and personal wishes unheeded. It all came true too, because Nana came over and was very sick. She thought she was dying because of her headaches. We even had a doctor come over. So the whole day was gloomy. Then, tonight Bonnie and I went to the show and I saw Byron’s car. I wanted to see him so bad… I thought he must be at the show too and I hoped he wasn’t with that girl… I was nervous and looked out for him all night…after the show we didn’t see him and his car was gone so my wishes fell through. We went to A&W after we left the show.

Narrowing the new crop of Saffron hopefuls down the the cutest girls in school

August 11, 1964, Tuesday. Called Gary’s house and bugged the boys.

Sandy and I bought stuff to make the Saffron new member invitations. We went to Jan’s house and I ate over, than had the meeting there. We discussed new members, who we liked and didn’t like. After that we went to Fosters, but I hate going there so much!..There’s nothing to do and I don’t like any of the boys. They think they’re so bitchen and they’re not!  We drove down to Toes and all the cool guys were there, but we couldn’t stop, so we came home and decided to make strange telephone calls to guys. Dianne called Gary’s and asked for a girl. She called back four times, each time talking to a different boy. They liked her sexy voice and never suspected that Sandy and were behind it.

After bashing all the potential Saffron hopefuls, narrowing the list down to the cutest girls in school…we made prank calls to the cutest guys at Westchester High School….

We didn’t have speaker phones in 1964, so had to take turns listening in on the phone.

Gary must have wondered why the same girl called back four times, asking to talk to a different guy each time.  He didn’t seem to have a clue that Dianne was relaying  information back to Sandy and me and we were loving it.

So bored, forced to get lost in sexy books like The Chapman Report and The Carpetbaggers

August 10, 1964, Monday. Read the “Chapman Report” REAL GOOD!

Didn’t do anything all day or night, just went up to Lauri’s and looked at her 7th grade yearbook. Saw Jack, Bryan, Craig and Phil. I couldn’t believe how they looked back then. I started reading the “Chapman Report” and couldn’t stop reading it. You wouldn’t believe that book. It’s so dirty. I stayed up until 2:00 in the morning reading about the sex life of six housewives. It told every detail of their bedroom life. Think I’ll read the “Carpetbaggers” next. I’ve gotten so bored that now I have to read dirty books for excitement and they just get me mad and hate men…Animals!

Based on the “Kinsey Reports” where Dr. Alfred Kinsey conducted interviews with thousands of men and women on their sexual habits, Irving Wallace’s blockbuster novel “The Chapman Report” concerns the interviewing of a number of society ladies from a community in California known only as “The Briars”. These interviews, intended to extract data for a book on the sexual habits of married women, lead the reader on a trail through the lives and loves of several very different women, and the men in their lives.

)THE CARPETBAGGERS (1964). The film is such an outrageous mix of Hollywood melodrama, pop psychology and salacious sleaze that it’s fun in a gruesome sort of way. It’s an adaptation of a novel by Harold Robbins, which is one of the best-selling novels of all time, and the movie was also a huge hit (even though it’s much less explicit ;-)). The characters are based on famous movie people of the ’30s (eg Howard Hughes, Jean Harlow, Tom Mix and Joan Crawford).

My great uncle, founder of the Maybelline Company, invites us up to swim, (pictures of his estate in 1964)

August 9, 1964, Sunday. We went up to Unk Ile’s today. I went in his pool.

Woke up this morning with no feeling at all for Howard. He lied to me again.  He said he’d call me as soon as he get’s back from Santa Cruz next week. I can’t go out with him, I don’t want people to talk about me. Today Pearl and I drove to Toes and got a coke, but when I saw his car we left. The whole family went to Unk Ile’s  tonight, to try out the new Whirl Jet Jacuzzi, in his pool. We all got in the pool and it was so much fun being all together as a family for once. When we left Unk Ile insisted he pay for us to go out to dinner and gave Dad a bunch of money, They all went to the Golden Bull, but my sister Donna and I just kept our money and went home to wash the chlorine out of our hair.

Bel Air Estate 6My great uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, founder of the Maybelline Co. lived in Bel Air, not that far from our house in Blair Hills, on the outskirts of Culver City.  Here are some pictures of the exterior of his home.

Bel Air Estate 2

It was always a thrill to drive through the electric gates and pull into our regular spot by the entrance to his steel and glass ultra Modern home.

Bel Air Estate 11

The open garage allowed his cars to be on display, adding to the romance of a Tropical Paradise.

The statue “Aspiration,” created in memory of Rudolph Valentino, once overlooked the pool at Unk Ile’s Villa Valentino, in the Hollywood Hills, now welcomed us at the entry.

Bel Air Estate 4

Here is the pool, which was actually very large and deep.  We had a lot of fun memories swimming here since 1950, when he built the home, after losing the Villa Valentino to the Hollywood Freeway.

Bel Air Estate 9

The lush landscaping created a virtual Garden of Eden and created privacy, which was his main objective, not wanting to be scrutinized by the public for his lifestyle.

Bel Air Estate 7

The property overlooked Los Angeles, from Beverly Hills to the ocean at Santa Monica and at night the twinkling city lights created a spectacular romantic ambiance .  I remember my dad asking Unk Ile, how much he thought the property was worth… and he humbly admitted $500,000.  Today the property is worth over 15 million.

Back on the merry-go-round with my ex-boyfriend!!!

August 8, 1964, Saturday. Went out with Howard and broke my promise to boys. (He’s an Animal)

Stayed home all day. Didn’t know if Howard was kidding or not. Didn’t want to go out with him so didn’t plan on it. Pearl and I decided to go to the show. But at 7:30 he came to the door with Doug.  I was real mad and not ready at all. He started to act like he owned me. On the way to Palisades to pickup Doug’s girl, Howard sang all our songs to me. I acted too dumb. We went to the show, but it was sold out, so we went to the Flying Jib at Toes. Everyone’s eyes bugged out to see us together again. I started flirting with a cute boy, but Howard pulled me away and we went miniature golfing. They called me dumb-dumb, because I got the worse score. We went to Denny’s… We parked and Howard got so wild I couldn’t get away.

saffrons rule making out in the carParking was part of dating.  I wasn’t in love with Howard anymore, but that didn’t matter, because dating meant making-out and making-out meant getting hooked in the game again.  Howard was poison to me, but once the control started, it was hard not being under his control. Because,           “Control meant Love.”

SEXPOT, some guy called me and I was highly insulted!!!

August 7, 1964, Friday. Howard’s determined to take me out!

My sister Donna and I went to Toes, but nobody was in a good mood. In fact they hardly noticed us. Howard asked me what I was doing tonight. Phil said there might be a party at Toes. Pearl and I took Donna and her friends Teri and Jerry to Surf Films in Hermosa Beach, but they were sold out, so we cruised Fosters. Some guy called me a sexpot. I never got over it. Angie Kamola and Bonnie Cavaliere were there. They just came from a Wedding. We cruised my 57 Chevy to Toes and Howard was there, but there was no party. He asked what I was doing tomorrow night. I said nothing, so he said he’d pick me up at 7:30

sharrie and uncle Ches HainesHere I am with my great uncle Ches Haines.  Notice my Saffrons Pictures on the wall.  I guess I liked being a sexy Barbie Doll, but nobody had ever called me a sexpot before.  I never looked or dressed cheap.  I did wear heavy eyeliner and pale lipstick like the style dictated in 1964 and I guess Playmates of the month, in Playboy Magazine, had a similar look….  That’s probably why Howard was buzzing around me again.

I’m sure Howard used his inheritance and the sexy 1964 XKE Jag as a carrot, to suck me in again, but I wasn’t buying it

August 6, 1964. Thursday Howard asked me out tomorrow.

Pearl, my sister Donna, her friend Linda Klein and I drove to Toes. Howard and Doug were there. They were making Brownies, so I helped them. Howard asked why I didn’t ask him to the Miss Culver City Coronation. I told him I went with Dave Kendal and didn’t ask him, because he was going steady. He said he wasn’t!! He asked if I was going to the dance tomorrow. I said it was too far away. He said I’ll pick you up and take you. I said I don’t know…but I won’t go with him. He just kept staring at me. He said he’s selling his 64 Buick for an XKE because his uncle died and left him $25,000....I just stayed home tonight.

Starving and Stuffing while taking Diet Pills, started a lifetime of Yo Yo Dieting.

August 5, 1964, Wednesday.

Didn’t do anything all day, just washed my hair and got dressed by 4:00. Shelia brought her new baby by and he’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! I ate so much I’ve gained back 5 lbs, but, I’m getting more diet pills tomorrow. Linda K stayed all night. She want’s in Saffrons so bad and I know she won’t make it. We just danced and listened to records. Got a fortune today, it said I was about to meet a boy who will be more of a good friend. I sure hope so. I sure need a boyfriend. I feel like a clod.

saffrons rule binge eating

This was the beginning of a lifetime of starving and stuffing also known as Yo Yo Dieting, or Weight Cycling.  I became very good at restricting my food, which caused depression, anxiety and all kinds of emotional issues.  However, such control over my body kept me thin even while pregnant.  I joined Weight Watchers the second I got pregnant, when I was 30 and only gained 23 lbs, which I lost almost immediately.  in my early 40’s I discovered Over Eaters Anonymous and that was the beginning of coming out the eating disorder that started when I was a teenager.

saffrons rule yo yo diet

Recent research suggests that 95 percent of dieters fail to keep the weight off and continually lose pounds on countless occasions but end up putting it (and more) back on, overeat due to stress, depression, boredom, and fatigue, and constantly crave, or binge on, fat and calories.

Donna will automatically become a Saffron in the Fall, because she’s my sister

August 4, 1964, Tuesday. I’m Co-Activities Chairman for Saffrons.

Pearl P. Charlotte T. and I went to the pool all day, than went to the Saffron Meeting. My sister Donna came as a guest. She’s in Saffrons for sure, because sister’s get in automatically. Everyone liked her. We discussed who we want in the Club next year. Chopped almost everyone in school out. I was made Co-Activities Chairman because Angie K. never comes to meetings. After the meeting Pearl, Dianne B, Donna, Molly M. and I went to Fosters. This dumb Cop was buggin everyone. He made us leave so we went to Roberts Restaurant, than back to Fosters. The Cop really got mad and asked to see Pearl’s license, which she left at home. He made us leave. Got my Horoscope…shows hope! Sure hope so.

My sister Donna and I are two years apart, so when she becomes a Sophomore I will be a Senior.  She won’t have to worry about pledging for Saffrons like I did.  She will have to go through Hell Week and Hell Night, but she will be initiated automatically.

Sneaking into the drive-in cost me a lot more than the price of a ticket

August 3, 1964, Monday. Crime Doesn’t Pay!

Laid in the sun all day. Then Dianne, Pearl, my sister Donna and her friend Linda K. and I decided to go to the drive-in. But,three of us were going to get in the trunk. Then Linda and Pearl didn’t go. So we got a great idea. Dianne drove into the drive-in alone and Donna and I crawled through a hole in the fence, but I tripped, fell down and ripped my favorite yellow capris.  There was no time to whine…because we had to move fast, get in the car and park. A guy on a bike came up to us and said we had to pay or leave. We were so mad, we said the movie wasn’t worth it and left. But, we came back and all crawled through the fence and sat on the ground and watched the movie. Then we got a real shock when we saw Sandy’s boyfriend, Richard Cavaliere with another girl.   We quickly crawled through the hole in the fence again and ran home to tell Queen Sandy.  She was so mad, she said she was through with him.

saffrons rule hole in the fence

With the Miss Culver City Contest behind us, we got back to just being teenage girls doing Summer Vacation.  The Culver drive-in had a hole in the fence and we took advantage of it just for the thrill and fun of it.  Sadly I tripped and ruined my yellow capris, so it wound up costing me a lot more than the price of a ticket.  I guess Crime doesn’t pay.

Sandy may have won the Miss Culver City Contest, but now she had to face her boyfriend cheating on her.  I guess every good thing that happens has a price tag on it. (However, Richard and Sandy got married right out of high school.)
