I might have let Howard do anything. One thing for sure is I’ll never wear a skirt again.

February 1, 1964, Bitchen Night! I love him too much, I’m worried.

Didn’t do anything all day. In fact I felt sick. I ironed 20 blouses. Picked up my sister Donna and her friends Teri and Linda at Teri’s house at 5:30. Howard picked me up at 7:15. We went to Lou’s. He told me he beat up Ernie. I got mad and called him a “Gang Fighter.” Then he said he was just kidding. We watched surf films of all the guys. I sat on Howard’s lap the whole time. He said I smelled like a flower. He still wanted to go to the dance, but it was too late, it was 9:00. He’s so strong, he picked me way up in the air. Lou got a new car, but it wouldn’t start. We wound up going to the Loyola to see “Man in the Middle,” and “Surf Party.” They were so dumb we almost fell asleep. During intermission we walked over and sat with all his friends. Ernie was there, but saw Howard and left, cause he heard Howard was mad. We watched “ Surf Party” with all the Howard’s friends in his club, West Side Surfers. All they did was chop the whole movie. After, we went to Denny’s for coffee. Al was there with some other boys. All they did was tell jokes and laugh. The lady almost Kicked us out. Al got kind of crude. Went to Lou’s, everyone was in bed. Went home, parked by Pat’s house. I’m not such a prude anymore. I’m getting worried about myself. I might have let him do anything. One thing for sure is I’ll never wear a skirt again. I really enjoyed making out for once.

If Mommy stops me from going out with Howard I will make her pay!

January 31, 1964, Friday, Boring Night

Mommy took me to school. Most of my friend’s stayed home. We didn’t do anything all day cause it was the last day of the semester. Drew “Murphy pictures,” of all my friends on the blackboard in Burke’s class. They were so funny. Lauri drove me home. It was terrible. First, Mommy is trying to make me write 200 times, “I love my mother.” I got real mad and told her she was Nuts. She told me I wasn’t going out with Howard tomorrow. If she stopped me I’d make her pay for it real bad!  Cause I refuse to me treated like a baby! Shelia left Culver, had to go to Venice High School. I’ll miss her so much. Had to stay home and take care of Billee and Preston, real boring night.

I’m soooo scared, cause I don’t know how to dance like those Westchester kids. They are so dirty.

January 30, 1964 Boring Day, Peroxided my sister Donna’s hair.

Boring day at school, didn’t do anything cause finals are over. Just talked. I feel sorry for Janice, I don’t think anyone is going to her party. Howard has to work so I can’t go It’s couples only. It wouldn’t be any fun anyway. We’re going to the “GRAND” Saturday. I’m going to wear a skirt and blouse. I’m soooo scared, cause I don’t know how to dance like those Westchester kids. They are so dirty. What am I going to do???? I’ll shame him, I’ll be the girl from Culver. I love him so much. I hope all his friends like me, so far they do. Had no homework. Can’t wait to tell everyone he’s teaching me to drive his car.

I don’t know how to dance like the kid’s at Westchester High.

January 28, 1964, Tuesday. Hard day, tired, no Saffron meeting, Finals.

Drove to school, took Marilyn and Vera. The American Lit final was sooooo hard. After school went to Lauri’s. Made tuna sandwiches and then fell asleep. Bought two Supremes, 45’s (records) at White Fronts, then went to Andy’s for pizza. Went home, Mommy told me the school called to see if I was cramming. I think it was one of my friends. Picked up Donna (my sister,) from school then bought some black shoes. Came home. Howard called, said he was going to teach me to drive his car a stick shift. He’s going to pick me up from school tomorrow. Went to the store and bought some bread. Came home and studied shorthand until 11;00. Janice is having a party Friday but Howard has to work. Guess I won’t go. Angie’s in the Hospital.

You can be sure I was buying every Supreme 45 record in 1964.

January 29, 1964, Wednesday-— Bitchen day- felt so sorry for Ernie, Howard thinks he’s so great.

Snuck out of gym to meet Howard. He got a new radio in his car. He tried to teach me to drive his stick. Went to Westchester High. It was Bitchen! All these boys came up to me. Couldn’t find Ernie. Saw Eric with his girlfriend. Howard knew everyone there. Teacher caught him, so we had to get off the campus. We’re going to the “Grand” with three other couples Saturday. I don’t know what to wear, or how to dance like those kids, (Dirty Dancing.)   Came home, kissed him goodbye. Cleaned the house. Went shopping, saw Fred, told him I was back with Howard. He said I should be a Lady Wrestler cause I fight boys so off so much. I ironed 30 pieces of clothes tonight. Mom is sick.

Surfers, Drummers and guy’s with convertibles got the girl

January 27, 1964 (Finals) Hard and fun day)

Lauri drove me and Marilyn to school. Finals were hard. Took two of them for two hours each. Got out of school at 12:30. Drove Marilyn home. Then we went to Dorsey High. I don’t know why I did it. Rose Blincker said she saw Howard at a dance, he asked about me, this was before he called me. Got in Fred’s, World lit class again and had to pretend I was taking the final, even though I didn’t even go to that school. Left Dorsey after 5th period. Left final I took on Mikes car. Said give my love to Fred. I had written Howard all over the paper, as a hint, Ha Ha!) We went out to lunch at Woody’s, then up to Westchester High and saw Ernie. He was mad when I told him I was going to school with Howard instead of him. Went to some girls house. Then home. Nana and Jean and Al came over, uncle Al got a new Cadillac. Howard called. I’m going out with him Saturday. He say’s he’ll let me drive his car. A convertible GTO with the hood off so the engine shows. (unbelievable he’d let me drive it.)

Surfers and guys in a band – that’s who turned my head in 1964.

January 26, 1964 Sunday Bitchen day.

Got up at 11:00, Lauri picked me up and we went down to Toes. Didn’t see Howard. Drove over to his house. It’s the biggest house I’ve ever seen, he must be rich. Drove back to the Fountain, in Playa Del Rey, where I was supposed to meet him. I was right behind him. Followed him, he stopped, told us to go to Lou’s. It was great there. So many people and Lou was playing Wipe Out on the drums with his band. He’s great! Howard and I laid on the couch, just about to kiss him when Niles started do his Frankenstein act. Lauri and I never laughed so hard. I think Howy was looking at her. It was Bitchen!!! Bryan called, asked me out. Said no! Studied for finals. Bryan kept saying he loved me.

Making-out at the Drive-In and my hair didn’t get as messed up as usual.

January 25, 1964 Saturday, Bitchen night.

Went out to lunch with Lauri at Truman’s in Westwood. Howard picked me up at 7:00. Went to the Drive-in and saw Under the Yum Yum Tree. It was so funny. I just loved it. Didn’t watch the first movie, don’t even know what it was about. Howard got a little hot and heavy at times, but I stopped him. My hair didn’t get as messed up as usual. Had trouble with the windows, they kept getting all steamed up. Went to Lou’s after the show. There were 9 boys and 2 girls there. They put on a big show for me. It was so funny. Got kind of crude. After a while I was a little shocked. Howard got mad at Bryan for calling me. Went out to eat at Denny’s. Al and some other boys came in. We went to Toes, (in Playa Del Rey) and Howard showed me his house. Went home, parked across the street. He doesn’t want me to go out with any other boys. I just love him.

So. I like the guy every other girl on the beach is after. That’s competition, in 1964

January 24, 1964 Friday a work day

Drive to school, picked up Marilyn and Vera. After school we went into American Lit for help. Wasn’t the only one, all the chairs were filled. He gave us the answers for the final. Left to pick up Billee and Preston from school. Came back and stayed until 4:30. Took Edna Phips, Linda Gonzalez and Marilyn Collier home. When I got home Brian Dalton called. Didn’t know who he was. He told me how terrible Howard was when he went to Tijuana. He said Howard knows every girl there. Then said he wanted to take me out. I told him Howard wouldn’t let me. He said Howard had 7 hands on each arm. Don’t know how he got my number. He’s a friend of Howard too. Went to Angie Komola’s and studied for finals. Everyone was there.

My goal was to be Gidget, without ever going in the Ocean

January 23, 1964 Thursday Happy Day Howard’s is 19 today!

Mom had to drive me to school. Had to pick up Marilyn, Vira and Candy Pounds. I’m real friendly with Sandy Block. (Yay!!! today is Howard’s Birthday, he’s 19. Just love him.) Had to stay after school in bookkeeping with Pearl. Stayed an hour and a half. Then went to Pearl’s and studied until 6:30. Mom picked me up, ate dinner and started to comb my hair out, when Howard called. He was working. Said he’d pick me up at 7:00 Saturday. He doesn’t want to come in and talk to my parents again. Ernie called after him. He’s going to pick me up Tuesday and take me to Westchester High School. Monday I’m going  surfing with Howard.  Wednesday going to Fred’s school, (Dorsey.) We get out of school at 12:30 because it’s finals.

My idol was Gidget, except I was more of a Beach Bunny, watching the Surfers.  It was a  “Surfers Rule” kind of Surf Culture, for me…. and Howard was a Surf god in 1964.

Stripping and toning my hair when I should be studying for finals. It’s all about looking good for Friday night.

January 22, 1964 Wednesday Scared Day

Got to drive to school today. Picked Marilyn up. Was cold and wet out. After school, drove Marilyn home, then picked up my little sister Billee and my little brother Preston from Catholic School. Went shopping and got some yellow Capri’s, yellow blouse and a white blouse and orange scarf….. Tonight went to Lauri’s and she stripped my hair. It was white!!! Sooooo scared, it looked ugly!!! Went to Thrifty Drug Store at 10:00 at night to get a toner. It turned my hair kind of reddish blond. I don’t like it. Got to bed at midnight. I had worked for four hours on my hair and washed it five times!!! I was afraid to go to school. My sister Donna told me Howard called. I bet he called to tell me he can’t go out this weekend.
