The Mr. Novak auditon, caused me to loose the Miss Culver City Title.

August 2, 1964,Sunday. Felt so low next to Sandy Block

I was with Sandy all day, but was so sad to see her Crown and trophy, for winning the Miss Culver City contest. She said I lost because they considered me a professional, because I said I was going to be on “Mr. Novak.” She took me out to dinner, but I felt like a big clod.

saffrons rule looser I guess during my interview with the Judges, I mentioned I was going out for a part on the Mr. Novak tv show, but I didn’t have the part, so, I don’t believe I said I was for sure going to be on the show.  No matter what it caused me to be disqualified in the most embarrassing way and it was extremely Ego-Deflating.  I felt so less-than, next to Sandy now… but she was my good friend so I kept it to myself and let her have her moment of Glory.

Today I believe Sandy deserved the title of Miss Culver City, because she had to be on call for events at a minutes notice while I still was getting sick all the time.  Also Sandy died a few years ago of Cancer…I’m so glad she got to have such happy High School memories.

I was disqualified as a contestant in the Miss Culver City Contest

August 1, 1964, Heartbreaking night, I was disqualified and Sandy Block Won!!!

Tonight was the Queen’s Coronation. I went with Dave Kendal and we doubled with his friend, Sandy and Timmie. The whole night started of wrong. I made Dave wait a half hour before I was ready, than we couldn’t find the tickets. When we got to the Sheraton Hotel Dave didn’t want to stay all night. Everyone looked so beautiful and I got so many complements from everyone. I was so nervous. Then they announced the winner. It was Sandy Block and Nina Corera. I Knew all along. But the shock of the night was when it was announced that I was disqualified for being a professional actress, because I had auditioned at MGM and was possibly going to be in Room 222. Dave almost pulled me out of the Ball. He was terrible. I wish I didn’t go with him. I was so sad we left. We just went to my house and I changed into capris while the three of them drank beer. I hated Dave! We went to get Crappy Hamburgers, while all the others girls were going out to dinner. We came home and played sad records until 2:00 in the morning. Dave fell asleep. I wanted to cry, but I had no feelings at all. Mom and Dad were sad too, they felt the judging was unfair. Dave and his friend’s date were making out on the chair in my living room, making it a perfect ending to a terrible day.

It was so humiliating to be disqualified right before they announced the winner.  My parents always felt that Sandy’s mother, who was very involved in Culver City politics instigated the rumor that I was a professional actress so her daughter would win.

Between Sandy winning and me being disqualified publicly, Dave making out with another girl right in front of me… at my own house! And Byron asking another girl to go steady I was crushed for the rest of the Summer of 64.

It was supposed to be the perfect Summer, me and Byron spending it together enjoying the sun, surf and the moonlight, now it’s shattered, Byron broke my heart and is going steady with another girl.  My Summer is ruined and I just want to cry! (by Carl Hjermind)

Pausing to grieve the loss of my grandmother, before the Miss Culver City Coronation

July 31, 1964, Friday. Ernie got I an accident

Washed my hair and laid in the sun, than to my surprise Ernie called. He just got in town and asked me out. I said OK because we are such good friends. Then about an hour later he called and said he got in an accident and the driver got a broken arm. Ernie wasn’t hurt. I told him to call me from the hospital, but then I went to granddaddy’s and didn’t get home until 10:00, so I don’t know what happened to him. I was so sad after I came home, because it was the first time I ever went to my Mayme’s house since she died a year ago and granddaddy married Mary. I started crying because Mary was taking her place.

Maymee

Mayme was my precious grandmother on my mother’s side and she pretty much raised us kids, so losing her was as painful as losing a mother.  My grandfather only waited one year before marrying his mistress 35 years

.  So even in the midst of all the Miss Culver City excitement, going to Mayme’s house and seeing Mary in her place was heartbreaking.

Hunting down my ex boyfriend to ask him to be my date for the Miss Culver City Coronation Ball

July 30, 1964, Thursday. Going to the Ball with Dave Kendal

Saffrons put on a banquet for our sponsors, The Lion Club. It was real fun. We served them food we made ourselves and entertained them. So dumb. Pearl and I went to Cesar’s to see Dave, because I’ve got to ask him to go to the Miss Culver City Coronation Ball with me. He wasn’t there. In fact nobody even heard of him, so we drove to Hermosa Beach and Toes. Then we went to Pearl’s and ate. Called Dave, but he wasn’t home. He finally called me and said he’d go with me. I’m so happy, now I can go to the Ball with a cute date.  I’ll be sad though, because I know Sandy Block will be the Queen. Sandy and I went to Fosters at 9:00 pm, than came home. She’s so happy I’m going with him. Don’t like Byron Ferguson anymore.

Dave was a very cute Surfer from Westchester High School.  We dated a few months and broke up because I was too high maintenance and we wanted different things in life, but, I needed a date and he was be perfect to escort me to the Miss Culver City Coronation Ball, so I asked him and he said yes.

I was known in Saffrons as Barbie Doll because I had all the Barbie Doll clothes and long ponytail.  Here a couple cute pictures stylized by my high school Carl Hjermind, that capture my Barbie image.

From Miss Popular to Byron’s Clown was quite a fall from Grace

July 29, 1964, Wednesday. Bryon’s going steady it’s a sad sad day.

Well Mom and I shopped again for garments and shoes today. I bought 3 inch heels. I’ll be taller than Dave I bet. Came home. Felt sad because now I have my outfit, but nobody to go to the Ball with. Pearl called, the party was called off, so just stayed home. Called Byron Ferguson, to ask him if he’d go with me, then I almost died. He said he’d love to go with me, but he’s going steady. I went into a state of shock and wanted to cry. This is the darkest day of the Summer. Now there’s no hope at all. My Summer’s ruined. Then on top of that, Angie K. called to say George Harris called and asked her the same questions. Now I know Sandy B. won the Miss Culver City Contest.

Asked my ex boyfriend to be my date at the Miss Culver City Corination.

July 28, 1964, Tuesday. Bought a Formal and called Dave Kendal.

Mommy embarrassed me so much I cried for an hour. She wanted me to go with Dave so she called his house and asked where he was, but couldn’t say who she was for her daughter’s sake!  After I got over that, we went shopping to the Brides Shop in Beverly Hills. We found a yellow Formal. It fitted tight in the front, with a bouffant back. We bought it even though it was too small. I got enough nerve to call Dave’s house and talked to his mother. I love her. She said he’d love to go with me to the Coronation. Went to the Saffron Meeting, than to Robert’s Restaurant. Boys told me of a party tomorrow.

It embarrassed me so much I cried for an hour.  However, she knew how to take my mind off my feelings… She took me to the Beverly Hills Bridal Shop and bought me the most beautiful Movie Star Formal I’d ever seen.  Mom even altered the Formal to fit like a glove and actually sewed me into it.   I wish I go back and tell her how much I love her and appreciate how much she loved me too.

I will be going to the Miss Culver City Coronation dressed like a Sexy Barbie Doll

July 27, 1964, Monday. Can’t decide to go to the Coronation as a Barbie or Sex Pot

Went shopping at 10 am with my sister Donna and Mom. We must have gone to a hundred stores. Found three Formals. One white Sheath with a bustle in the back, a white one with an enormous skirt, so beautiful and a black and white sheath. I can’t decide. I like the white ones but will probably get the black and white one. Came home at 9:30 pm. We shopped for 12 hours. I feel so sad because I know I didn’t really win and now my hopes ar built up only to be terribly disappointed. So sad. Nothing good has happened all Summer. Just sad let downs. I don’t even have anyone to go to the Ball with.

My name in Saffrons was Barbie Doll, because of my hair, clothes and car.  So I guess I will be going to the Coronation as a Sexy Barbie Doll.

Scuzzy Pervert calls and tells me I won the Miss Culver City Contest and wants to know my bust measurment

July 26, 1964, Sunday. Man from the Times called and said I won the Miss Culver City Contest.

Some man from the LA Times called. Said he wanted to take pictures of me at the beach. He said I won the contest and Sandy was my runner up. He asked a lot of personal questions. I wanted to hang up on him. He asked about my beautiful figure and my “big bust.” He scared me.  He wants me to go with this guy who can get me in the movies. He offered to buy my formal for $150.00.,,, Sandy, Dianne and I drove to Hermosa Beach. I want to ask Dave Kendal to the Coronation, but don’t know how to find him. Later, I went Formal shopping with Mom. Pearl came by. She was real depressed because nobody remembered her Birthday.

saffrons rule scuzzy guyThis is how I pictured the Scuzzy Pervert who called and asked me what I was wearing and what my bust size was.  My dad came in and hung up the phone and was furious.  Thank Goodness I had a father who cared.  He watched over me until his death at 82.  He was a tough old WWll guy, nobody wanted to mess with.  I called him the General.  Still it scared me every time a Scuzzy guy came on to me when I was a young girl.

In another life, Byron would never have gotten away! Katy Perry – The One That Got Away

July 25, 1964. Saturday. Went out with Bob Fortenberry, boring night

Angie and I went to the beach all day. First Toes, talked to Brian and Nile’s. They almost raped a girl after we left last night. Howard and I talked a long time. I told him I met his new girlfriend Dianne. We left and went to Sunset Beach. It’s so bitchen there, but we didn’t see any cut guys. Came home. Bob Fortenberry asked me out, he bugged me to go, so I felt sorry for him and went. It was a party at his apartment. Only four couples. It was so boring. I was sad all night just thinking of Byron. We went on a wild goose chase looking for a party. We all got in a fight and just sat in little groups talking about how much we hated each other.

This say’s it all!!!  I love this Video.

My old Boyfriends spoiled my chances of getting the most Bitchen guy in town.

July 24, 1964, Friday. Saddest day of the Summer, I want to die.

Went shopping again for formals, Mommy didn’t like any of the one’s I picked out, so came home and got dressed and picked up my friends. We went to a Westchester dance, but couldn’t get it. Went to Toes and got the saddest sight of my life. Byron drove in with a girl in a new car. He just said hello. I almost got sick to my stomach and almost cried. He even called me Sandy. We left and went to Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. Took this guy who knew Dave Kendal and all the guys. We went to a couple parties, No good. Came back to Toes and went to a party at Gary’s, but the Cop’s broke it up.

I was getting my heart broken this time.  Byron was the one that got away. But,  to make matters worse, he got the new car he said he needed to ask me out.  It will take months to get over this.  I guess it’s payback for being such a spoiled brat and a snob to all the guys.  They  talked about me and turned him off.  Guy’s can do that.  Now the Summer is ruined.
