The perfect “UGLY FAT GIRLS BEACH” where we could be invisible while working on a tan.

June 14,1964, Sunday. Went to the beach with Pearl

Took my sister Donna, to her friend Teri Thompson’s house. Pearl and I went to some secluded beach where no one could see us, because we are so fat and ugly. We drove way down the Coast, there wasn’t a place to park, so we came back to Santa Monica. It was almost raining and we almost froze to death. We only stayed about an hour. I came home and laid outside for an hour. Daddy and I went bike ridding. I did exercises for an hour. I want to lose 10 lbs so much. Sure hope I lose weight in my legs.

There were no sexy Beach Bunnies or bitchen Surfers, to look good for.   We were invisible, working on our tan, even on a cold overcast June Gloom day.

I didn’t know anyone as wild as a Westchester girl, when it came to guys,

June 13, Saturday, Went to wild Westchester Party.

Laid in the sun all day. Phil picked me up about 8:00. We all went to a party in Playa Del Rey. It was the worst thing I ever saw. Every girl there was a slut, I think they were all drunk. They wore Hip Hugger Shorts and Crop Tops. They were all over the floor and the beds. A girl would go from one boy to another an make out with him. Phil tried to kiss me, but I wouldn’t let him. We went to the Jib, so they could get a beer. Saw Pam and Jerry Booth and Doug. I had a crummy time. I didn’t see Dave, but all the guys were at the Jib. I wish I liked someone again.

There was a real difference between Westchester Girls and Culver Girls.  I didn’t know anyone as wild as a Westchester girl, when it came to guys, dirty dancing, making out at parties and wearing practically nothing on a date.  We’d wear crop tops and shorts over our bathing suits at the beach, but not in a making out situation.  Nobody wanted to be known as a Slut in Saffrons.  Maybe that’s why Howard and Dave left me for Westchester girls,  I wasn’t as easy as I might have appeared.

We’ll I’m going out with my ex boyfriend’s good friend… Everly Brothers – Let It Be Me (1964)

June 12, Friday. I’m going out with Phil

Had history final, got a 75%. Was real happy. Jacky and I went shopping. We went all over town from Tops and Bottoms to Westwood Village. I got a yellow two piece and three pairs of shorts. We shopped for 6 hours… I had the worst headache. Dianne and Maryanne called, we went to a party at Mike Janoff’s. There were so many kids, but we didn’t stay. We drove down to the Jib in Playa Del Rey. Jack and Phil were there. Phil asked me out again and I said OK, because we’re doubling with Jack and Sandy Block. We drove around and around all night.

Everly Brothers – Let It Be Me (1964)

I wasn’t crazy about dating Phil, (Not Phil Everly,) but there was nobody else around so I let it be him.  This Everly Brother’s song was one of my all time favorites and since Phil Everly’s death their song’s have made a big comeback.

This Summer everyone would be at Toes in Play Del Rey, or the Wall, in Santa Monica

June 11, 1964. Dave Kendal’s 18th Birthday.

Wore my watch to school, it was first day of Finals, so we got out of school at 12:30. and went to the beach – to the WALL – in Santa Monica. I felt so out of place in my bikini, I had to lay on my stomach because I’m so fat. We came home and I ate so much of my Birthday cake. I didn’t go to Drama class because I had to study for History. I’m getting so tan!!  I only wish I could lose 10 lbs.  Going shopping for bathing suits with the money Granddaddy gave me for my Birthday. Got to bed about 11:30.

Summer was here and everyone I knew would be at Toes in Play Del Rey, or the Wall, or Station 2, near the Fun Zone in Santa Monica.  All my friends had new Summer Bikinis, a golden brown tan and Sun bleached hair by September… when we would at last be Seniors at Culver City High School.

My “Sour 17” Surprise Party with all the Saffrons

June 10, 1964, Wednesday. I’m 17, It’s my Birthday. I want to weigh 115 lbs.

Woke up to a table filled up with presents and cards. Granddaddy left me 25 dollars. At school everyone sang “Happy Birthday.” After school I laid in the sun and talked to Nana. I Couldn’t believe it, but, Mom and Dad got me my own phone. Then I got the surprise of my life. While I was opening my presents, Chris Drinkard came to the door, followed by all the Saffrons!  I got a real Surprise Party. We had cake, Spaghetti and salad. The Saffrons gave me the best thing ever. “A Barbie Doll,” and a watch band with Saffrons engraved on it. We had so much fun. Mom, Dad and Nana were so bitchen. It was the best Birthday I’ve ever had. I had a “Sour 17 Party.” All my friends had a Sweet 16 Party and I was crushed I missed mine because Mommy was in the Hospital. It was the worst Birthday ever. This Surprise meant, oh so much more to me this year.

Is it ever cool to date your buddy’s ex girlfriend?

June 9,1964, Tuesday. Really went off my diet. Saw Dave, Jack and Phil.

I did good all day. I wasn’t even hungry. Then I came home and laid in the sun, but ate a piece of toast. Phil called and I told him I was going to McGee’s. When we got there he was there with Jack and Mike. Marilyn and I ate spaghetti with them. She acted so wild and I was sort of quiet. Phil asked me out. I told him I had finals. We left and went to Fosters. I almost died because Dave was there with JB.  He was very friendly.  We ran into each other just kidding around. Jack hung him up and he was mad he didn’t get to go to McGee’s. I wouldn’t tell him why Jack did it… so Marilyn told him it was because Phil wanted to ask me out. I left, came home and ate a Steak.

Saffrons Rule Phil asked me out

I guess Phil didn’t pick Dave and JB up for dinner at McGee’s, because he wanted to ask me out and couldn’t if Dave was sitting there.  After all they were friends and we’d recently broken up.

I wasn’t attracted to Phil anyway, so made up a dumb excuse of why I was busy.  I guess Dave still liked me, since Jannie wasn’t interested in going out with him.

Dating Your Friend’s Ex Click for the answer.

There are many unwritten rules between friends. The two biggest rules are: never use anything friends say against them… and don’t date their exes. If the ex-girlfriend rule is ever broken, chances are that the friendship will be lost, and a physical fight might even break out. As much as men swear that their exes don’t mean anything to them, it still hurts when they realize that their women have found someone new. If that someone else is a close friend, it just amplifies the pain.

My Mother either didn’t know what the “PILL” was for… or knew and didn’t tell me

June 8, 1964, Monday. I’m the fattest girl.

Nothing happened today. Stuck to my diet real good, until I came home, than ate so much. I’m so fat I hate myself. Mommy called the doctor to see why I’m gaining weight. He was glad to hear I wasn’t getting sick anymore, but these pills he gave me are giving me such an appetite. I’ve gained 15 lbs. I’m really trying but it’s hard. I won’t go to the beach until I’m tan and have a good figure. I feel so ugly. I go bike ridding to firm up my legs.

THE PILL AND THE INVENTION OF THE MONTHLY Cycle

I had no idea Ortho-Novum, the pill Doctor Zampetti gave me for my sickness, was the first birth control pill on the market.  I wasn’t having sex in High School, so taking it for that reason wasn’t an issue.  My Mother either didn’t know what the “PILL” was for… or knew and didn’t tell me…. The whole point was to regulate my monthly Cycle so I wouldn’t get sick anymore. However, the side effects made my boobs bigger made my face break out and I gained weight. Eventually I read an article about it in a magazine and stopped taking it.

My mother got hysterical when she found out her 75 year old father ran off and Married a woman, she knew nothing about

June 7, 1964, Monday. It’s true, Granddaddy eloped and got Married.

Lauri slept over last night, but left in the morning. Well, it’s true, Granddaddy married some Lady named Mary. I can’t believe it’s true. How he could be so untrue to Mayme. Mommy is really upset. We never want her to come over. That’s mean, but she’ll never take my Mayme’s place. I loved her so much, it hurts me to think Granddddy could just forget his past like that. He called from New York. Mom talked to him and Mary. She sounded High Class  They were Married Wednesday by Mr Hoag, in Mayme’s Church.  Westwood Congregational Church.

Granddaddy and Mary had secretly been seeing each other for over 35 years and wanted to finally tie the knot.  He was still working at MGM and I guess needed a wife.  He Married Mayme when he was 19, in 1909.  Men just can’t be alone for long, they live longer being married.

My 75 year old Grandfather, takes a 70 year old Bride, giving me the shock of my life.

June 6, 1964, Saturday. I think Grandaddy got Married.

Got up and went bike ridding until 12:00, laid in the sun until 3:00 and stayed on my diet all day long… I lost 3 lbs. I’ll loose 5 lbs by Monday. Got pretty tan. Lauri and I went to the store and got a box of Epson Salts, because it really helps you lose weight. I also got peroxide for my hair. Came home and got the shock of my life. We got the Insurance Policy Grandaddy took out when he went to New York. It had a Mary MacDonald on it.  We think he got married.  Mom and I almost got hysterical.  I can’t believe he’d do this to my Mayme. She’s only been dead one year. Where did he meet a woman he could Marry so fast. He never brought anyone over to meet us. Is she young or what? He’s 75. Why did he have to get Married.

My Grandfather, Andy Mac Donald, eloped and married Mary Washburn, one year after my Grandmother, Mayme, passed away.  It turns out Mary and Andy had been together over 35 years.  She was basically his Mistress.  They waited a respectful one year and got Married.  He was 75 and she was 70.  They were married 13 years, until his death in 1978.

The first out of control Open-Party of Summer 64 ended with the Police breaking up a fight

June 5, 1964, Friday. Big party in Baldwin Hills, bitchen night.

Pearl and I are sticking to our diet’s real good. After school came home washed my hair, went bike ridding, ate dinner and went to sleep until 8:00 when Pearl called. We were going to go bowling for exercise, but when she got here, she said there was a big party Richard Castoria told her about. We got dressed and went to Vets Memorial Auditorium, in Culver City, where everyone was seeing Joe and Eddie. We found the Open-Party. There were at least 300 people and you couldn’t move. The house was a mansion. There were fights going on so we left and went home about 12:30.

The party at the mansion with 300 wild kids, was way more exciting, but with so many body’s crammed together, it was impossible to meet any cute guys, so when the police came and broke up the fighting we got out of there.

Open Parties were the rage during the Summer of 1964.  They could get so out of control… only the Police could break them up…. and you didn’t want to go to jail.
