My Dad was a perfectionist and didn’t think my Saffron picture was worth $12.50

June 4, 1964,Thursday. Got Saffron Pictures.

Sticking to my diet. We got our Saffron pictures today. Daddy was mad because he doesn’t think they were worth $12.50. I think they’re good. I wish I could give one to Dave. I got a big shock today. Marilyn’s Mom ran away and got married, but he’s rich. Had to go to Drama class, but, didn’t want to. I was so tired. I did real bad, because I wasn’t ready. Almost fell asleep on the way home.

I thought my Saffron picture was great, but my dad, who was used to Maybelline Movie Star ads, thought they were ordinary…  $12.50 in today’s money, would be about $91.00….  My dad as a young boy, spent a lot of time with his uncle Tom Lyle Williams at the Villa Valentino, in the Hollywood Hills, where Maybelline’s famous glossy color ads were created. He also worked at MGM for a while in the Art Department, so was a hypercritical perfectionist when it came to beauty of any kind. No wonder I was the way I was as a kid.  Not a regular teenager in 1964.

I must lose10 lbs and get a quick tan before school is out in two week.

June 3, 1964, Wednesday. Really on a diet, “Prisoners of Fat”

Everyone wore orange and white Saffron colors today. Pearl and I are on a diet. We’re going to lose 10 lbs by June 15, when we’re out of school for the Summer. She came over after school and we rode bikes, did exercises and ate a little dinner. After dinner we went for a walk to the park and worked out. Than we came home and did homework. We call our club of two people, “Prisoners of Fat.” Went to Westchester and looked at Bathing Suits. I looked so fat. Went to Save-On’s and got some Quick Tan and took Pearl home. Went to bed so I wouldn’t eat. Felt good.

The pressure was on, Pearl and I only had two weeks before school was out and we’d be going to the beach everyday.  We had to get a quick tan, loose 10 lbs and look good in a bikini.  That was the diet mentality in 1964.

Immediate results, quick fixes and Immediate gratification.

Because this was the mindset for a perfect Summer…. A 1964 Mustang convertible, the beach, bitchen guys and cute girls.

Saffron Seniors get ready to graduate, now my class moves up to top position in the club.

June 2, 1964, Monday.

After school I had to go to gym detention. Did exercises for an hour and was so tired I went home and set my hair for the Saffron meeting. We had elections. Marilyn is now President, Sandy Vice President and I’m on the disciplinary board. We had a party for Seniors and after had a cake. We gave them orange and white corsages, It was sad. We went to Fosters after. Jack and Gary were there. Dave didn’t come. Jack noticed I cut my hair. Dale said Dave said I was too old for him. I guess Jannie told him I said he was a child. He probably hates me now.

1964 – year of the Beach Boy – Beatles – Battle of the Bands… the West Coast vs the East Coast, Tan vs Pale.

June 1, 1964, Sunday. Jannie doesn’t like Dave at all.

Got up at 5 am to finish my term paper. My eyes are sunburned, so wore dark glasses to school. My sister Donna is real sick. She got a sore throat and it’s all pusy, probably from surfing. Hope I don’t peal. Stuck to my diet real good, until after dinner when I made the Saffron cupcakes. Daddy and I went bike riding to Fedco and got Donna a Beatle record, but it wasn’t the right one, so we brought it back. I didn’t go modeling, was too tired. Instead I laid in the sun. I itch so bad from the sunburn on my back. Dave might come to Fosters tomorrow.

Summer vacation is almost here, so Saffron-Girl, Barbie, better get tan asap.  I regret burning myself over and over throughout the years.  Being tan was so important in California, with the beach only a few miles away.  The worst thing was being a super white California Girl in a bikini.

The Beach Boys – Surfer Girl (’64)

The Beatles and the Beach Boys ruled the music scene Summer of 1964.  My sister Donna loved the Beatles, I loved the Beach Boys.

Was it uncool to cruise a guy’s house and spy on him.

May 30, 1964. Saturday. Sandy and I went spying on Jack and Dave at Toes.

Came home from Lauri’s and laid in the sun at 11:00. Took my bathing suit top off and laid on my stomach. Dumb kids wouldn’t leave me alone. Came in at 4:30 and was really burned. Called Sandy. She missed Dave and me last night. She picked me up and we went to a dance at school. No one was there so we left and went to two parties. There were no good people there either. We were so dumb…..drove by JB’s for an hour. Parked the car and spied on them. We were so scared we’d get caught, but we didn’t.  Found out Jack was in Jail.

saffrons rule spying on guys

Saturday night, bored and no date.  What else is there to do but spy on your guy right.  I know it was a little obsessive and possessive, but a lot of girls I knew did it in High School.  Today it would be called stalking.

Culver City High School Senior Ditch Day, 1964. I felt so unpopular tonight

May 29,1964, Friday. Most boring Friday night in a long time. Today was senior ditch day. Was so boring, I should have ditched too. Junior’s took over the Senior Lawn. After school we went to Lauri’s and cut her hair like mine.   Picked up her Ice Skates and bought some ice cream for our big night of doing nothing; but eating, watching TV and doing exercises. Slept all night because Donna and Billee had their friends over. We went to bed at 10:30. Was so bored I fell asleep. I felt so unpopular tonight. Sandy went out with Jack.

Just like a young Marilyn Monroe, I had my own acting coach

May 28, 1964. Hope Dave and I won’t always be enemies. Didn’t do much today. Came home and studied my script, and went to drama class at Patricia Stevens. It’s so bitchen and Mr. Louis is a great acting coach. I learn so much from just watching him. He said I showed improvement from my last performance. Today was Girls League Assemble. All the officers wore formals and 9th graders came. I wrote Dave a letter today saying I don’t hate him and I want to be friends. Sandy said she’d read it to him. JB called Jannie and asked if she’d go out with Dave. She doesn’t like him. How great is that.

Marilyn Monroe, 22, takes lessons with acting coach, Natasha Lytess

Because my grandfather worked at MGM for 55 years, and my mother had been a Studio Brat with the best of the best dancing coaches, I knew the importance of having my own acting coach.  Just like Marilyn Monroe when she was  starting out in Hollywood.

Andy Warhol’s Edie Sedgwick was my Party Girl Role Model in 1964

May 27, 1964, Wednesday.

Told everyone I hated Dave because he’s such a child. Pam told Donna he likes Jannie his old girlfriend again. I knew he would like her if he saw her at the Saffron party. That’s why he was so cold to me, he wanted to be with her not me. My song is “Party Girl!” I think I’m just using Byron as an excuse. I don’t think I really like him, he probably doesn’t even remember me. And all the guys are telling him I want to go out with him. I hope Dave doesn’t hate me. Even if he hurt me, I still want to be friends. Went to Patricia Stevens Modeling. It was about hair care. They don’t like how I wear my hair. Too Full.

Andy Warhol, discovered Edie Sedgwick at a party in 1964.  She became the ultimate Party Girl, the IT GIRL of the 1960s.  I was influenced by her, because I wanted to be discovered as well.  Amazing as it sounds I’m her niece, Hana-Lee Sedgwick’s Godmother.  6 degrees of separation as they say.

Binge Eating was the way I coped after breaking up with my boyfriend

May 26, 1964, Tuesday. I wonder who Byron is going out with.

Jack said he would talk to Bryon.   He probably won’t even remember me.  After school Pearl, Jackie, Maryanne and I went to Santa Monica Library to work on our term-papers. I took two of their magazines. We picked up Patty Roud. I called Jack to find out how to get to McGees. I could hear Dave in the background. We we got to McGees and ate soooo much spaghetti… because It’s all you can eat on Tuesday’s for 50 cents. Some boys ate with us. They knew all the boys we knew. I told them I thought Dave was a child and I was through with him. We went to Fosters and ate chocolate dipped cones in the car for an hour.   Wasn’t any good because hardly anyone good was there. Byron is known as “The Lord” at school… he’s probably no good.

Image

I may have acted confident about breaking up with Dave, but I felt insecure and anxious….  Stuffing on Spaghetti and Ice Cream wasn’t a good idea since I was dieting….. I guess I was eating to fill the void in my heart….. Binging on  spaghetti and ice cream for comfort is Emotional Eating.

Image

Angry + lonely = ice cream. Hurt = chocolate. Bored + cookies = guilt.   Ice cream is first on my comfort food list.

May 25, 1964, Monday. Want to go out with Byron.

Well I’ve convinced myself I’m going to play the field, not sticking to one boy. Dave and I weren’t made for each other. All he wants is his friend JB, beer and his surfboard. I can’t waste my time on him anymore, I’m going after Byron Ferguson next. I‘m spreading the word that I want to go out with him. But, he’s always busy playing in his band on the weekend. He’s so bitchen! Sure hope he asks me out. Jack and Sandy Block are still going out this weekend. Dave isn’t going to ask me out anymore.  I hope he’s sorry he lost me.   I want to really make him jealous.

The Power Of Jealousy  –  CHECK LIST:  First, have no contact with him.  Second, make him regret losing me!!!  Third, get on with my own life……  I can’t wait to see what I’m going to do next.  Looks like I think another bitchen guy is the answer.  We shall see,  stay tuned….
