Donna and I got in a big fight over who would get the big bathroom. Had to flip a coin. She won.

March 5, 1964, Thursday.  Preston’s fourth Birthday.  Wish Howard would call.  I want to be with him every minute.

Press is four today.  He got a wagon and some other toys.  Mom had to take me to school, in the T-Bird, because my 57 Car is being fixed.  Was a tired, boring day.  Sharon W. say’s she’ll go out with Phil.  I got a picture to show him of her.  Nish say’s we want Lou’s Band for our Saffron Dance.  I’m so glad I can’t wait to tell Howard.  Got Saffron Pictures back from “Hell Night,”  I look so ugly.  Did my play today with Melanie.  Was best in the class. We both got A’s.  Had to go home with Lannie.  Frosted the cake.  Nana, Grandaddy and Jill P. came over for dinner.  Donna and I got in a big fight over who would get the big bathroom.  Had to flip a coin.  She won.  Miss Howard. Won’t see him until Saturday.  Forgot to pick up my car.  Will get it tomorrow.

Some guy wanted to know where I got my bitchen 57 Blue and White Bel Air Chevy

March 4, 1964, Wednesday, Ugly Day – We almost got in a fight about Tijuana.  He lies to me.

Drove to school.  Looked ugly all day because my hair was a mess.  Came home did my roots.  Than we had to take my car to have the brakes fixed.  Some guy there wanted to know where I got such a bitchen car.   A 57, Bel Air Chevy, blue and white, with black and blue interior and blue dashboard.  I told him it was my grandmothers.  My grandfather gave it to me after she died last year.  Such a bitchen car for a girl, he said.  Came home and fell asleep until 8;00.  Then forced myself to get up and make my little brother Preston a birthday cake.  While doing this Howard called.  He wants a picture of me.  He says we’re going to the mountains for a weekend.  I told him I wouldn’t do it.  Told him I think I got someone for Phil.  Sharon Wright. We’re going surfboard shopping Saturday.  Meeting him at the beach.  Sure hope we can go out Saturday.  He’s getting a day job so we can go out at night.  He’ll take me to Club Night.  He can’t call tomorrow.

March 3, 1964, Tuesday. Don’t think we’re using Lou’s Band.  What am I going to tell Howard.  Saffron Club Picture Night.

Drove to school.  So windy I could hardly stand up.  Had subs in most classes.  After school came home, set my hair and went cruising.  “It was too GREAT!”  First we went to Howard’s house.  His car was there it looked so bitchen.  It’s on a rake, (“Rake” is when your front end is lower than your back end. Makes the car look “fast.”)  with head rests, new hub caps and a vibransonic radio.  We were going to leave a note in it.  Then we tried to find Lou’s house.  We drove around in a circle and wound up at Howard’s again. We drove through a dozen streets, but couldn’t figure it out.  Finally after an hour, we went to Denny’s and I figured it out from there.  Had club pictures taken. I had one separate one made for Howard.  The rest in groups of two or more.  Sure hope mine comes out good.

March 2, 1964, Monday, Told everyone I’m going with Howard. Ugly windy day.

Drove to school. It rained last night. It was so windy my hair blew apart as soon as I got out of the car. Latest news is Cindy W. is pregnant. She goes down with every boy she goes out with. She’s only known the boy for three weeks. After school took Marilyn to get a job at Newberry’s. She didn’t get it. Then went to Fosters. Went home and fell asleep until 6:30. Than Daddy was on the phone with Nana until 7:00. I was so mad. Wrote the letter to Unk Ile, about what my friends think of Maybelline liquid Eyeliner . Sending it tomorrow. Howard called at 8:30. I talked about using Lou’s band for the Saffron Dance. I sure hope we use them. Also he wants me to fix Phil up with someone. Howard get his license back in 3 weeks.

So he say’s “What do I have to do, buy you a $10,000 ring!”

March 1, 1964, Sunday. Howard lies, and he still hasn’t told me he loves me. I haven’t told him either.

Had to sleep on the couch, because Teri slept over. Drove her to Church. On the way, saw Marilyn. She got our Saffron sweatshirts. Went out to lunch at Woodies. Teri made a fool of herself. She wouldn’t come in because she looked weird. Told Marilyn I’m going with Howard. She was so happy. Last night I told him of all the girls who tell me they know him. He asked me if I told them I was going with him? I said, No. He said, “what do I have to do, buy you a $10,000 ring.” I said, “no, $20,000, I like expensive things. He said to tell everyone we’re going together. Went to the beach. Saw Dave Kendal and Mike… Said they saw Howard driving around with Phil S… Told Lauri, Bonnie and Pearl about us going together. They can’t understand why he lied about that house. He hasn’t told me he loves me.  Dave Kendal sure is cute and a good surfer too.

I just wanted to hear the words, Will you be my girl, or Will you go steady with me.  He just couldn’t say it out loud.

Supremes Baby Love

So I get it, He wanted me to commit by having sex and I wanted him to commit by giving me a verbal, I love you will you be my girl.  Neither of us could do it, so the constant breakup and trying over and over again to make it work. Just too young to get serious.

He smells so clean, like Jade East cologne and freshly starched shirts. We’re going steady I guess. (He never asked me, or gave me a St. Christopher)

February 29, 1964, Saturday, Howard acted like he loved me. I’m not such a prude anymore. Bitchin night.

Went to the beach. Howard wasn’t there. It was so windy I almost got blown in the water. Found out Howard really didn’t live in that big mansion. Went home. Bonnie and I went out to find Howard’s real house. We found it and he was working in the yard. We couldn’t believe our eyes. Such a little house. We solved a mystery, but why did he lie? Ernie called. Told him about Shelia. He almost died.  Pat, Al, Howard and I doubled, went to the BeverlyTheatre and saw Dr. Strangelove.  But, didn’t think the movie was that great. Al and Howard almost got in a fight in the parking lot because some guy wrecked his car. Went to Lou’s for a couple of hours. He got pretty violent. He felt me up and everything. Said we were going to the mountains, but, that I’d probably get pregnant before we came home. (For some reason that sounded so romantic.) I love making out with him, he smells so clean, like Jade East cologne and freshly starched shirts. Were going steady I guess. (He never asked me, or gave me a St. Christopher, but he acts like it.) He said he’d call tomorrow.

In the 60’s surfers wore St. Christopher medals as a good luck piece to protect them while surfing. St. Christopher medal was synonymous with fleeting romance as“Moondoggies” and “Gidgets” exchanged them as a symbol of “going steady.”

Jade East was a big hit with Surfers.  I loved the smell of it mixed with cigarettes and freshly starched white shirts.  That was the look, white button down shirt, cords, (corduroy pants.) and huarache sandals.

February 28,1964, Friday, Talked to Pat, she wants to dress up and wear heals tomorrow. Saffrons Slumber Party.

Drove to school, felt ugly. Today kids were kind a sad cause we couldn’t go to the snow. I really don’t  because now I can go out with Howard…… Angie, Sandy Linda and Edna made modeling!  Went home so I could wash my hair. But didn’t….. Donkey Basketball game tonight, but didn’t go because I went last year and got hay-fever. After the game a “Saffron Slumber Party,” but tonight it doesn’t start until 12:00. If I go I’ll be to tired to go to the beach tomorrow and go out tomorrow night. So, I told Pearl I had to stay home and babysit. Hope they won’t be mad. Was in a bad mood at home. I always am. My family Bugs me but I love them.

February 27, 1964, Thursday, Hope I don’t get Mono from Howard.  He finally called. Happy Day.

Drove to school.  The day was so long I almost fell asleep in class. Talked about the snow trip.  It seems Edna can’t go causes she got a job at J J Newberry, and works Sunday.  Marilyn can’t go cause her Mom doesn’t want her to wear herself out.  And, we don’t want Linda to come anyway.  Came home.  Al Walker called for Howard.  He’s been sick for three weeks, with “MONO.”  But, I told him to tell Howard I would go out with him anyway.  Howard called twice.  He doesn’t want me to go to the snow.  He said he would take me when he gets his license back.  Al called again, we’re doubling with him and Pat.  Granddaddy said I can’t drive to the snow, it’s too dangerous.  I don’t care now.  I can go to the beach with Howard.  Bonnie and Angie are mad sorta.  Funny how things work out.

I guess I was willing to get Mononucleosis (Mono,) just to go out with Howard.  I wonder if I actually will be crazy enough to do it.  We’ll see, stay tuned.

February 26, 1964, Wednesday, Didn’t like anyone at the Surf Films. Howard didn’t call

Drove Vera and Jackie to school. Everyone was trying out for modeling except me, Dianne, Patty, Vera and Lauri. Did Pantomime in Drama. It wasn’t very good, because we didn’t practice it.  Was stoked on Bob McNight, then heard he was engaged. Was so mad!!! After school went home. Pearl, Donna and I went to Surf Films at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Pearl and I wore our “Saffron” sweatshirts. The films were Bitchen. There were a lot of boys from Dewey Weber Competition Team. A couple of them were cute. Didn’t talk to any of them. They made comments at us. Donna sat with Teri and The South Shore Surfers. Saw Steve Thompson, Bob Dunion and Jeff Hansman. Went to Fosters after.

Big fight tonight. Sonny Liston lost to Cassius Clay

February 25, 1964, Tuesday, Saffron Club night.  I’m stoked on Bob Mc Night.  He called.  He’s so Bitchen.

Drive to school.   Marilyn didn’t go.  School was a drag.  After school most of the girls went in for modeling tryouts.  I took Linda and Elaine home.  Mom and dad were waiting outside school, followed me to Sandy’s, they wanted me to pick up kids from school, cause they were going somewhere.  Got in a big fight with them about Lana Belcher.  She just had a baby boy and wasn’t married.  Now they don’t want me to drive to the snow.  I have to ask Granddaddy about the car, how to change tires ect.  Picked up Vera, Judy, Pearl and Mary W.  Meeting was at Patty’s.  (Big fight tonight.  Sonny Liston lost to Cassius Clay.)  At Fosters saw Bob Mc Night again.  i want to go out with him.  He’s so cute.  Finally Howard called  me.  But, now I want Bob.
