Martin Luther King awarded Nobel Peace Prize today, while I’m Clueless!

December 8, 1964, Tuesday

Went to my Saffron Meeting and we decided to do the new version of the Littlest Angel, called The Littlest Ho-dad and I’m actually writing, producing, directing and staring in it!! Plus, I’m making all the costumes and casting the other parts. I acted out a few scenes for the club and they all loved it. I hope I can do it all in one week! I know nobody will help me, except maybe Pearl.

December 9, 1964, Wednesday

Nothing happened today, just another boring day, or should I say another lonely sad day without the boy of my dreams, (Byron.) I don’t think I’m going to write another diary next year, because it’s getting boring writing about nothing. Everything good happened the first 6 months of the year and the last 6 months have been hell!

December 10, 1964, Thursday…Martin Luther King awarded Nobel Peace Prize

I don’t think anything happened today, I just worked on my Great Play!!! It’s almost done…I love it…it’s so funny, I can’t wait to do it for an audience.

I was fined $5.00 at Juvenile Traffic Court for a moving violation ticket.

December 7, 1964, Monday

Nothing much happened. HUH!! I had to go to Court to pay my ticket. I was scared. Pearl and I got to the Court House about 11:30, after driving all over trying to find it where I was suppose to go. I lost my ticket when I lost my purse and didn’t know where to appear. We got to Juvenile Court at 12:00, just when they were closing for lunch, so we went out to lunch too, then back again. The Judge gave me a choice, of 10 days suspension or pay $5.00. I took the $5.00. I had to get a new drivers license too, because mine was lost with the purse.

$5.00 in 1964 is like $35.00 today.  I was only going to make $25.00 working at Charleston’s Dress Store, wrapping Christmas presents over the two week Christmas Holiday, so it was still a lot of money at the time.

Juvenile Traffic Court in Santa Monica was a big deal at 17 and yet I’d much rather pay the $5.00 fine, than have my license suspended for 10 day…who wouldn’t?  I can’t imagine giving up cruising in my cool 57 Chevy for that many days, plus I was making money working two jobs, and would be getting some money for Christmas, so it was worth it.

I was happy getting a new drivers license because my picture turned out so cute and I love my new hairdo, plus, my makeup was perfect, so it all worked out for the best!

It’s a good thing I’m so unpopular, because now I can finally accomplish something

December 5, 1964, Saturday

Went to work at Jack’s Ranch Market . I’m getting to hate this job! Tonight was another big night for me! I did absolutely nothing! Pearl and I stayed at her house and listened to sad records and read sad stories until we cried. Then, we actually boxed with boxing gloves…Big night huh? Well that’s what you do when you’re so popular! I must be the ugliest, most unpopular girl in the world.

December 5, 1964, Sunday. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, first aired tonight and we all loved it.

Went to work again. I don’t know how I can get up so early on weekends, but I do it. There was a special Saffron meeting today for the Saffron Breakfast. Only a hand full of kids showed up. We hardly got a thing done – But picked one play. We decided to do “The Littlest Ho-dad,” taken from the Children’s book, “The Littlest Angel.” Out of all the choices we had, including “Christmas in Toyland with the Adams Family,” (my original idea,) “Walking Ugly Meets the Dancing Dwarf” and “The Night Before Christmas.” The club expects so much from me, but doesn’t offer any assistance. I have all the weight of writing, directing, acting and making the costumes for everybody. That’s a lot of weight on my shoulders right now.

When it comes time for Jesus to be born on Earth, the Littlest Angel gives his precious box to the Baby, but he is worried that God will think his gift too humble. However, God is pleased indeed, and transforms the box into the Star of Bethlehem.  I plan to rewrite it using a little Rebel, a Ho-dad, instead of an angel.  It should be really good, if I get help.  (ho-dad. a nonsurfer who spends time at beaches masquerading as a surfer.)

Hunting down Elvis Presley at his home in Bel Air tonight

December 4, 1964, Friday Beatles release Beatles for Sale!

After school I went to Charleston’s Dress Store… I got the job!! I start next Saturday wrapping Christmas presents. I’ll make about $25.00 over Christmas Vacation. I was feeling so happy about my success, that I went shopping and then home. Tonight, we all went to a dance at the Inglewood Rec. absolutely nobody was there, but little kids, so we left after about an hour. We drove to Bel Air to see Elvis Presley’s house. Pearl and some other kids’ went up the driveway, but, ran back down just as fast. We went to Tiny Nailor’s in Westchester “The Bob” was there, but nobody else, except we saw Howard’s girlfriend. We went home about 11:30.

Here is what Elvis Presley looked like in 1964, when my 57 Chevy filled with Saffrons went looking for his house in Bel Air.  I actually never was an Elvis fan, but he was gorgeous!

A Charming Woman is a Busy Woman…Loretta Young

December 3, 1964, Thursday

I just worked on the Senior play, Home Sweet Homicide all afternoon, then went shopping with Pearl and her Mom. When I came home Sal Romero called, he’s starting to bug me. I don’t want to go out with him, so, I really try to avoid him. The playhouse called about my audition from the Sound of Music. I didn’t call back, because I’m too busy with my school play now. I’m going into see if I can work at Charlestons dress store tomorrow, to wrap Christmas presents. I have so many things going, work, the play, school, entertainment for the Saffron Breakfast, reports…I’m going crazy! If I get sick this time, I’m ruined. I pray I never get sick again.

Saffrons rule busy-woman
As you can see, this is the busiest I’ve been all year and I don’t have time to be with a guy I’m not interested in.  I may have two jobs any minute and rehearsal as well as school and Saffrons, so you can see my time is valuable and unless it’s Byron Ferguson, don’t bother me.

Pearl promised that if I lit her Chanukah candle and made a wish for true love, it would come true.

December 2, 1964, Wednesday

I worked of the Senior Play, Home Sweet Homicide after school, then went to Pearls to stay all night, because the play is on TV! We ate dinner and went to bed at 10:00, then got up at 12:30 and watched it. It’s so ridiculous, I couldn’t keep my eyes open and went back to bed. Tonight I lit one of Pearl’s Chanukah candles and wished Byron would like me! She promised it would come true. I’m really depending on it. I’d give anything to have a chance to see if I really like him. I’ll never know. All I want for Christmas is him!

I have been wishing, hoping and praying for Byron half the year, hoping he will break up with his steady girlfriend and ask me out.  Now I’m turning to Chanukah Candles, to make it happen.

I’m in charge of Entertainment for the Saffron Christmas Breakfast.

December 1, 1964, Tuesday

Went to the Saffron Meeting, first one with new members. We were really wild tonight! I was fined about 5 times for talking. We’re giving a breakfast for our Mothers and I’m in charge of entertainment. I’m going to do a Christmas Show, with dolls around the tree and Santa. We’re the dolls who come alive and dance and sing. If it works out it will be great, but I know nobody will work and I will wind up doing my Walking Ugly Skit. (A satire on Sleeping Beauty.) We went to Fosters after the meeting and I was in the greatest mood, but,  I’ll probably wish I hadn’t taken the job, because I’ll most likely be sick.

saffrons Rule christmas dollsMy vision for he Christmas Breakfast was dressing up like Christmas dolls, coming alive and singing and dancing.  I hope I can get some help to make this a great show.

Family friction over spending $50.00 on our grandfather’s Birthday Present.

November 30, 1964. Monday

All the Saffrons were supposed to wear the club colors, orange and white today, but nobody did! The members really had no enthusiasm after the horrible Hell Night. Mom and I went shopping for Granddaddy and Billee’s Birthday presents. We got Granddaddy a clock radio and Billee a yellow capri outfit.  Daddy was so mad all night, because we spent money on Granddaddy… He’s so unfair, after Grandaddy has done so much for us, I just can’t understand it! We had a turkey dinner, because we missed it on Thanksgiving.   Mary, our new step grandmother, seemed mad all night for some reason. I don’t think she fits in our family.

Saffrons Rule vintage-clock radio-zenith_1

This kind of clock radio cost about $50.00 in 1964, which by today’s standards would equal close to $300.  However, today clock radios sell for less than $50.00, which by 1964 standards would equal about $7.00.  My dad was mad that we spent that much money on Granddaddy, because he married the woman he’d been seeing for over 35 years, behind our grandmothers back and wanted us to accept her like she was our real grandmother.

Hell Night was Hell and I’m having second thoughts about being a Saffron now!

November 28, 1964, Saturday. Saffron Hell Night and Torture!

Tonight was really Hell! First of all I had to give up going to the dance in Westchester where the Crossfires were playing. Then I lost my purse!! I don’t know where, but I’ve lost everything!!! I’m just sick about it!! Then, confusion really started. The Pledges had to wear 75 pieces of clothes and strip down in front us us. They had to step on live snails, worms, fish and bugs. I almost went crazy watching it. They cried!!! Then, we bombed them with eggs and flour and goup. We hosed them off and went to another house to stay all night. It was too small, so we went to somebody else’s house. We took the kids in for an interview. We wanted to kick Debby K. and Carol G. out. They all cried. Sandy hurt Mrs. Quartes feelings, then we all started crying. The whole night was torture for everyone. Plus I had to sleep on a chair.

November 29, 1964, Sunday.

We got about a half hour sleep. We got up at 6:00 and all went out to breakfast at the Pancake House. I went home and slept until 3:00. The club was really mean to my sister Donna. When I got up Mommy really had a fit because someone stole Donna’s new $15.00 capris that she can’t find. She won’t stop yelling until we get them back. She called everyone and even went to their houses. The whole night was pure tortuous HELL!! I hated every second of it. I feel lost without my purse. The whole club stink’s now to me. I wish I had a boyfriend, so I wouldn’t need the dumb club.

saffrons rule sharrie and donna 002

My sister Donna and I are now both Saffrons, but she already doesn’t want to be in the club of “Mean Girls.”  I’m getting pretty sick of it myself at this point.  I hope I feel better about it after the smoke clears from Hell Night.  My mom is really upset about someone stealing Donna’s new Capri’s, but I think she just misplaced them.  Nobody would actually take them.  Losing my purse is the worst part, because I carry everything of importance in it and I’m lost without it.

Cruising in my 57 Chevy with Frankie Valli & the Four Season’s singing “Sherry Baby”

November 27, 1964, Friday. Howard took a girl home, then came back and talked to me

Sandy Block and I cruised all over tonight, but we wound up at Tiny Nailor’s in Westchester. At 10:30, we drove by the Westchester Rec. I almost died when I saw that Byron Ferguson’s Band, The Marauders, were playing and I didn’t even know about it!!  We couldn’t get in so, we went back to Tiny’s and my old boyfriend Howard Gertz was there with a girl. I was so embarrassed! He came in and his girlfriend was so ugly and what looks she gave me! There was an accident in front of Tiny’s and all of a sudden the place was full. I was so happy, because Byron came in and talked to me. I’d give anything if he’d ask me out, but he’s still going steady. Mike O’Donnell was there, but he’s engaged. Howard took the girl home and came back and talked to me, but we just snubbed him. Tomorrow is Saffron Hell Night!

It was so much fun having my 57 Chevy to cruise in, because everyone else who was out cruising recognized my car, with the dice hanging on the mirror. That’s how Howard knew I was at Tiny’s and came in to check me out.  I was crazy about him at 15 and 16, but, now all I want Byron Ferguson.
