If I don’t get this Term Paper done, I won’t graduate in June of 1965

December 16, 1964, Wednesday

Nothing happened today, just worked on the Senior Play, Home Sweet Homicide, until 9:00 at night. I’m going to school tomorrow.

December 17,1964, Thursday.

Didn’t go to school, had to do a term paper for Sociology. Got prettty much done too. Went to work at Charleston’s Dress Store and wrapped Christmas Presents until 9:00, then came home and worked on the paper until 1:30 in the morning. Not going to school tomorrow, until I finish the paper, or I’ll flunk the class. I always wait until the last minure, when I know it has to be done, but usually I get it done… I Procrastinate too much!!

The only thing I like about school is Drama class and my social life.  I can’t wait to graduate next June, (Hopefully.)  I remember when the Baldwin Hills Dam broke last January, I didn’t have my term paper done and told my teacher I lost it in the Flood.  I got two extra weeks to finish it.  I hate Term Papers, but now no more excuses, I have to get this done.

If I get a boyfriend next year I’m pulling away from Saffrons

December 15, 1964, Tuesday

I didn’t go to the Saffron Meeting tonight, because I had to work at Charleston’s Dress Store, wrapping Christmas Presents. The Club discussed Sunday’s Mother Daughter Breakfast and they were unset because $15.00 was spent on flowers. They owe Mom $10.00. Plus, they were mad because my Mom got the Hall from the American Legion and didn’t tell our Sponsors, the Lions Club. I don’t care, I’m so mad, because they don’t appreciate all the work we did to make it so nice. I’m learning that people don’t want me to be a Star too long. They want to cover it all up as fast as they can until they need a favor again.

Dear Diary…I guess after being so mean to the new Pledges during Hell Week and Hell Night, it all came back to me, when the club turned on me and talked behind my back.  My mom just tried to make the event as classy as possible and I killed myself on the entertainment, but, nobody appreciated it.  I think I’m getting over my love affair with Saffrons.  If I get a steady boyfriend next year, I’m not going to put as much energy into it anymore!

A Miracle! Someone returned my lost Envelope Clutch Bag.

December 14, 1964, Monday

Nothing special happened today. Just got in a big fight with Angie Kamola. I hate her so much, she’s so two faced. She thinks she’s so great! Just cause I got in the front seat of the Edna Phipps car, she didn’t let me forget it! She acts like an A-hole and I won’t bow to her for anything, plus, I think she’s jealous cause everyone raved about how funny I was in the Littlest Ho-dad! She and Edna didn’t even come to the show. By the way, yesterday, somebody returned the purse I lost. They found in at Newberry’s Drugstore. I was never so happy. “What Luck!” Lauri G. returned it to me. Thank God for small miracles!

I lost my Pink Vinyl Envelope Clutch Bag, during Saffron Hell Night.  It’s a very popular purse but, since I carry so much stuff in it, the purse is always wide open and bulging at the seams.  Also the fact I put the handle inside, makes it impossible to do anything with my hands.  I think I set it down at Newberry’s and forgot it.

But the good news is I had to replace my license with a cool new picture.

The Shangri-Las record, “Leader of the Pack” inspired my play, “The Littlest Ho-dad”

December 13, 1964, Sunday. Mother Daughter Breakfast

We got to the Hall at 9:15 and started rehearsing for the Play. We never even had the Characters cast before! And, we only went through it once, while I finished making the costumes. I prompted the kids, up until the last minute. We went on with a wing and a prayer and I knew it was up to me to carry the show… It was what you call impromptu… But, when I came out in a black leather jacket, pantaloons and my dad’s painting shoes, the people just screamed. I was such a ham. Just give me an audience and I’ll make the biggest fool of myself.  My costume was what made the show. Daddy’s big paint stained shoes, boxing gloves, daddy’s dark glasses, his hunting hat, red and blue socks and a black leather jacket over my pantaloons… covered in an angel robe and a halo. People said it was a real success. The Littlest Ho-dad and Walking Ugly are my two best Plays. My sister Donna, was in charge of putting on the record, “Leader of the Pack” and she blew it by scratching it while it was on full blast, but, that was one only mistake. It really made my Christmas, to pull this off!

saffrons rule leader of the pack

In 1964, the Shangri-Las did a spoof on TV, of their hit song, “Leader of the Pack. ”  It was about a biker who get’s killed on his motorcycle after his girlfriend breaks up with him.)  I thought the spoof was hysterical and it gave me the idea for the “Littlest Ho-dad”… I took the ending of the song and made it into a funny skit about what happened when the biker arrived at the Pearly Gates of Heaven and Saint Peter turns him away, until he discovered the Ho-dad, had a Heart of Gold.

Shangri-Las – Leader Of The Pack – 1964The game show “I’ve Got A Secret” featured the Shangri-Las (w/Robert Goulet.) at the time when “Leader of the Pack” was the number one record in the USA.

Working two job’s while producing a Play…I’m quite proud of myself!

December 12, 1964, Saturday

Went to work at Jack’s Ranch Market and then to Charleston’s Dress Store to wrap Christmas presents. Working two jobs and producing a play in a weeks time is a challenge, but I’ll do it all and will be great! Pearl picked me up at 9:00 and we came home to start practicing he Play for the Saffrons Mother, Daughter Breakfast tomorrow. I found the script I’d lost, Thank God!! I’m so happy it was in one of my books. We finished writing it , but nobody came to rehearse. I don’t know how we can put on tomorrow, without even running through it one time. But, if it turns our as well as my skit, “Walking Ugly,” I’ll be grateful. The Littlest Ho-dad is really a funny play, I’m quite proud of myself.

                                                  Opening of The Littlest Ho-dad

The littlest Ho-dad approached the Heavenly Gates in a most unusual way, In fact it the Heavenly Hosts weren’t sure at all if he had the right address.  He banged on the Golden Gates so loud all Heaven shook.

Littlest Ho-dad     Lemme in, lemme in I say!  Who’s in charge of this joint                                              anyway!

Gate Keeper          I beg your Pardon Sir, I fear you must have the wrong                                                  address!

Littlest Ho-dad     Whata ya mean I got the wrong address.  It says right here                                        2660 Heavenly Way, so this ain’t 2660 Heavenly Way?

Gate Keeper          Well yes it is… there must be a mistake!!

I’m not just looking at my mother, I’m seeing her for the first time

December 11, 1964, Friday

Pearl, Linda, Donna and I stayed home to work on the Play for the Saffrons, Mother, Daughter, Breakfast Sunday, but, a tragedy happened!!! I lost the Play I wrote! So, we just got our costumes ready and tried to write it over, but, it’s hopeless! It’s impossible!! I don’t know what I did with it. I guess maybe, I’m not supposed to do it…But, we had a great time making our costumes. Mommy got us a Hall to have the breakfast in, instead of Pearl’s house. She’s doing a lot for us. She’s getting the flowers for the center pieces, and things to make it really nice. Pearl stayed all night.

This entire year I have been fighting with my mother and she with me. Especially when I was going out all the time and was too busy and too important to listen to anything she had to say. The low point of the year was when I threw my shoes at her, because she made me stay home and babysit, instead of letting me hang out with my friends.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

But, I guess I’ve matured a lot, because I now appreciate everything she’s doing to help me make this the best Saffron event ever.  It’s like I love her and I hate her at the same time.  But, one thing for sure,.. I know she really loves me no matter what.

Martin Luther King awarded Nobel Peace Prize today, while I’m Clueless!

December 8, 1964, Tuesday

Went to my Saffron Meeting and we decided to do the new version of the Littlest Angel, called The Littlest Ho-dad and I’m actually writing, producing, directing and staring in it!! Plus, I’m making all the costumes and casting the other parts. I acted out a few scenes for the club and they all loved it. I hope I can do it all in one week! I know nobody will help me, except maybe Pearl.

December 9, 1964, Wednesday

Nothing happened today, just another boring day, or should I say another lonely sad day without the boy of my dreams, (Byron.) I don’t think I’m going to write another diary next year, because it’s getting boring writing about nothing. Everything good happened the first 6 months of the year and the last 6 months have been hell!

December 10, 1964, Thursday…Martin Luther King awarded Nobel Peace Prize

I don’t think anything happened today, I just worked on my Great Play!!! It’s almost done…I love it…it’s so funny, I can’t wait to do it for an audience.
