My bitchen 57 Chevy almost blew up on Coast Highway at Malibu Beach

August 23, 1964, Sunday. My car almost blew up at the beach

Went to Church with my sister Donna and her friend Teri Thompson, so we could straight to the beach after. Pearl and Bonnie met us there. Then we drove to the gas station and found out the radiator was full of oil. The man said someone must have put in in there. We drove to Toes, than to Malibu. But after driving 3 hours, we couldn’t find a place to park…. Then the car started getting hot and leaked oily water. I was so scared, I went back to a gas station. The car almost blew up. We hardly made it home because the transmission almost fell apart. I didn’t tell mom and dad, because they were in a bad mood. I went to Pearls and stayed all night and ate and studied modeling. Going to the beach tomorrow.

When the mechanic at the gas station in Playa del Rey, told me someone put oil in my radiator I knew it was some guy at Toes, who was mad at me, or jealous a girl had such a “TOUGH,” 57 blue and white Chevy.

One of the most popular Surf Spots in the world was Malibu Beach, home of mega millionaires and Movie Stars.  To have my car break down and almost blow up was the worst thing that could happen on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon, in our bathing suits!

I was so embarrassed when my bitchen car started smoking and leaking oily water right at the most congested part of Coast Highway in Malibu.  What could be more uncool.  It was a big CHOP ON ME.

saffrons rule gas station 2We actually had to wait around while the mechanic checked my car after it almost blew up in front of everyone at the hottest part of the Southern California.  You can just imagine a movie camera panning up higher and higher as my car smoked up a storm in the middle of Paradise.

Looking for my perfect Ken Doll at Bob’s Big Boy in Van Nuys Ca

August 21, 1964, Friday. Pearl came home from New York

Laid in the Sun until Pearl called, she just got home from New York. I picked her up and we went to Toes. Saw Lew. There’s going to be a big party at Toes Monday. Tonight Pearl, my sister Donna and her friend Teri T. and I drove to Toes than to “Bob’s Big Boy” in the Valley.  It wasn’t as crowded as last Friday We sat there for two hours and ate. I hate myself, because I wasn’t even hungry. Then this boy we met last Sunday came over. He’s nice and could be bitchen if he had long hair. He’s a Ken Doll for Barbie. We left and came home. Donna, Terri and I read our Diary’s to each other until after 2:00 in the morning. You should have seen the Moon! So sad! I wished for a boyfriend so much.

When there was no action at Toes in Playa del Rey, we all chipped in for gas, which was 25 cents a piece and headed for Bob’s in the San Fernando Valley, looking for cute guys.

Saffrons Rule Ken Doll

I found a perfect Ken Doll boy, but his hair was too short.  That’s how picky I was for perfection.  So I kept sifting until I found the right one.  It was all about looks.

As Summer was ending the moon began to turn orange and was so big it took my breath away.  All I wanted was romance, so seeing the moon made me feel sad and alone.

Donna, Teri and I all kept Diary’s and it was so exciting to actually hear what was going on in each others lives.  Two Surfer Girls and a Beach Bunny’s secrets.

It was a CHOP to be seen at the drive-in without a date

August 20, 1964. Thursday. Went to the drive-in with Sandy and the kids.

Stayed home all day and did my hair. Tonight Sandy Block and I took Billee and Preston to the drive-in and saw Bikini Beach and You People. They weren’t great, but the worst part was when Pam and Jerry Booth walked by. Sandy and wanted to die. Here we were all cramped up with two little kids in the drive-in. I told them we were babysitting. They must have been talking about us, because they came back and asked me how long I’d been going with Howard. I said three months, but I really had been going with him on and off for two years. Richard Cavaliere came to spy on Sandy and they got in a big fight. Sandy was sad about it.

Chop~To cut down verbally. Example: “Man, you’re so ugly, you gotta slip up on a glass to get a drink of water.” (Now that was a “chop”.) NOTE: This translated to “Burn” in the Seventies and onward….. Luckily it was a Thursday night, not Friday or Saturday, so actually babysitting my brother and sister wasn’t totally a chop.  We knew Jerry Booth would tell Howard and all the guys at Toes, Sandy and I were at the drive-in without dates and realize we were available again.

Some sex-feign followed me home at 1:00 am.

August 15, 1964, Wednesday.

Greg called to find out what happened to Rick and Doug, because they never came home last night. I took Billee and Preston to Toes and nobody was there at all. I even went in the water! After that we went to Sandy and Dianne’s house and than to Fosters. Tonight Bonnie C. and I went to the show and saw, “Good Neighbor Sam,” and “For Those Who Think Young.” They were the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. When we left the show, some weird boy followed us. In fact he followed us to Bonnie’s house. I asked him what he wanted and he said he wanted us to ride around around with him. I got scared, turned around and went back to Bonnie’s. He finally left.

I was Cold as Ice if I didn’t like a guy, so he’d never ask me out again (Foreigner…Cold as Ice)

August 18, 1964, Tuesday. Went out with Rick

Took the kids to Toes. When I got thee all the guys were there. Even Howard. He’s growing a beard. Everyone was telling me that Rick liked me. I met him. He’s nothing. When I came home Doug called and begged me to go out with Rick tonight. I didn’t want to go, but Doug begged me so much I gave in. went the the Saffron meeting and Sandy Block said I shouldn’t have gone. Doug picked me up at Fostoes and we picked up Ann. I didn’t like Rick so I hardly talked to him. We went to the Drive-In and saw the end of “Lady in a Cage,” and “Seven Days in May.” He put his arm around me, but I was as cold as ice. I wouldn’t even look at him. I said I had to be home by 10:00.

We’d always end up at the Jib at Toes. It was a Hub where Surfers and Beach Bunnies hooked up and made dates.

August 17, 1964, Monday. Took Billee and Preston to the show

Lauri and I took my sister Donna and her friend Teri surfing, then drove to her beach … Station 2 at the Santa Monica Pier. I looked so ugly with my hair in rollers and no makeup. Tonight Sandy and Dianne Block and I took my little sister Billee and brother, Preston, to the show to see the Beatles Movie A Hard Day’s Night. It was really good. Sandy and Dianne just love the kids. After the show, we took the kids home and drove down to Toes. We saw Gary Fox working in a gas station and felt so sorry for him we took him to dinner at Tiny Nailor’s. He’s so sweet. We talked about all the bums (guy’s we’re mad at) at the beach. He told us that Doug is going to marry Ann. We went back to Toes and saw Eric Olson. I made a fool of myself at the Jib, trying to figure out who he was. Greg told me Rick likes me.

I feel so cheap when I’m with the Surfers at Toes. I need to rethink my dating choices

August 16, 1964, Sunday. Went to Toes and to Bob’s Big Boy in the Valley

We wanted to go to Newport Beach, but we all got up too late. Sandy and Dianne Block and my sister Donna and I went to Toes and at at the Flying Jib. We saw Jack, but he was leaving, so didn’t get to talk to him. I hate those boys down there, I feel so cheap when I’m with them. Howard must still be in Santa Cruz. Jack and Phil are going there Wednesday. Sandy and I were supposed t meet some young Doctors tonight, but they never came by. We drove to Bob’s, but there weren’t as many kids there this time. Some guys were throwing things at us and one, one was darling and he asked Sandy out, but after talking to him, we thought he was weird. He was only 17 and stuttered.

saffrons rule feel-cheapI sleep until noon, I don’t have a job like most of my friends, I take diet pills and starve and stuff and I hate the guys at Toes I’ve dated…..All they want is my body and if I don’t give it to them, they stop calling and asking me out. What’s wrong with this picture?

American Graffiti from a girls point of view… Cruising El Segundo, Playa Del Rey and Culver City looking for cute boys

August 15, 1964. Saturday. Went to five parties tonight

Didn’t do much today, got up about 1:00 pm. Mary and Granddaddy came by. I took the kids, (Billee and Preston,) out to dinner with Lauri and her sister Ronda and her little brother Neil. (I’ll never do it again!!) Tonight Dianne Block and I went to a party in El Segundo, but it was “so bad” no cute guys at all. They were married couples anyway, so we went to Toes and saw all the gang, even Jack! He looked so bitchen. I’d love to go out with him, but I know Sandy still likes him. We left and went to a couple more parties. No good! Then we went to Tito’s Tacos, Edna P. and Linda G. were there. Told them we were at a party with their boyfriends.

Discovered a new hang-out… Bob’s Big Boy in the San Fernando Valley

August 14, 1964, Friday. Found a new Hang-Out…Bob’s Big Boy

Laid in the backyard all day. Tonight my sister Donna, Bonnie C., Angie K. and I went to a party down by the beach. It was no good because there were old people there except for a few of our friends. It was a beer party and with all the food you want and a crummy band. Angie talked German to all the men. I said she was my cousin from Germany. She’s quite an actress. Barbara was drinking and looked and acted like a slut. We left and drove to “Bob’s” in the Valley. It’s so bitchen. I’ve never seen so many kids at a hang-out. We didn’t meet anyone.

saffrons rule Bobs big boy

Van Nuys California….On Friday and Saturday nights, cars like these were driven back and forth by teen age drivers and their impressed passengers. From Bob’s Big Boy restaurant near Chandler street to the San Val Drive In Theater in the north, cars were a statement, and gasoline was somewhere around 20¢ a gallon.

saffrons rule bobs big boy 2

The parking lot at Bob’s, was so packed we could hardly find a place to park and it was so crowded,  it was impossible to meet anyone.  So, we left and promised ourselves we’d cruise back to the Valley soon.

A Baby Shower for my 16 year old friend was not what I imagined it should be

August 13, 1964, Thursday. Shelia’s Baby Shower

I was so unhappy with Shelia’s Baby Shower. It was so unorganized. Some girls came in capris and even Shelia came in shorts, until she saw how dressed up I was, then went home and changed. Most of my friends weren’t there, just Shelia’s friends.( I don’t want Jackie in Saffrons because she has a bad reputation). I gave the baby a Baby’s Life Book, a pad for the crib and yellow boxing gloves. After the shower I came home, than went shopping for mom. I didn’t do anything all night, because everyone works, so just stayed home. Nana stayed all night again because she’s sick.

A lot of girls smoked in High School.  Shelia got me to try it once, but I threw up and never did it again.  The Baby Shower was so full of smoke I knew I’d smell like cigarettes and have to take my clothes to the cleaners.

Shelia asked my mother to be the baby’s Godmother, because she was instrumental in getting her and Steve to get Married and keep their baby boy.

I brought a little flower arrangement like this to Shelia in the Hospital when the baby was born. The Shower was scheduled after she came home.

These little 1964 Snoopy Baby shoes were a favorite Baby Shower gift.

I thought these were perfect for a baby boy.

I bought Shelia the Baby Book, because I kept a Diary and hoped she would start writing about her Baby’s first five years.  I tried to get all my friends to keep a diary, but most said they were too scared their parents would find it.
