I’m not willing to be a Groupie…It’s not the Image I’m going for

July 23, 1964, Thursday. Met a girl Howard’s been taking out

Bonnie and I went to A&W’s but no good, Byron wasn’t there, but one of the guys in his band talked to us. Told us they were playing at the “Grand” Saturday night. We left and went shopping for formals for the Miss Culver City Coronation. I don’t know who I’m going to ask to go with me, I’m afraid I will never see Byron. I laid away a couple of dresses in about five stores, all black and white and one Orange and White. Went to one store and started talking to this girl who knew all the guys from Westchester. I asked her if she knew Howard and almost died. She’s the Dianne, Howard’s been taking out. She said she heard him talk about me too.

Here is another picture my sister Donna’s friend, Teri Thompson drew of me.  She said I looked like a white Diana Ross.  I don’t understand why I never went out of my way to find Byron at one of his Band jobs.  To much pride.  He wasn’t the type to go after a girl, like I was use to.  He was a drummer in the Marauder’s and girls flocked to him.  He hung out with the Turtles, a soon to be famous Band.

If I had gone after him and become a groupie, I bet he would have asked me out.  But I’m sure he heard I was a Prude and didn’t want to bother with me. (How to be a Groupie.) click to see what I wasn’t willing to do to get Byron.

I think I blew the Miss Culver City Contest because I wasn’t prepared

July 22, 1964, Wednesday. Tonight was the Miss Culver City Contest

Bonnie Cavaliere and I went to Joanne M apartment and saw her new little baby boy. Then went to see Shelia and her new baby. She looks great. The baby is so beautiful. Left and drove to the beach. Cops stopped me, almost gave me a ticket, but I was lucky. Had to be at the contest at 7:30. I looked ugly. My suit was too tight, my hair was straight, then to top it off I was the first one to go up. I think Sandy Block did the best. I know she’ll win. Angie Kamols, Patti Carrol and I went to Roberts Restaurant after. So many boys were there. I know I don’t have a chance to be Miss Culver City. I don’t care, because all I want is Byron.

Had my picture taken for the LA Times, in a bathing suit for the Miss Culver City Contest

July 21, 1964. Shelia had a baby boyfriends

Went to have pictures taken for the newspaper in a bathing suit. It’s for the Miss Culver City contest. Went to Bonnie’s. She just go back from her vacation. Waited so long to go to the beach. Finally went with Angie to A&W, Byron wasn’t there. We left and I went home and got ready for the Saffron meeting. Marilyn lost my orange bathing suit I let her borrow, but she won’t tell me. So I’m just going to keep asking her until she tells me. Shelia called, she had her baby. It’s a boy, she’s going to keep him. Went to McGees and had spaghetti wit Pearl. Came back to Fosters, talked to Doug Thompson. Went home and again I’ll never see Byron.

I’m the blond in the center, #5.  We were only allowed to wear two piece or full piece bathing suits, not bikinis.  I wore a bright yellow suit that stuck out like a sore thumb against my tan and very blond hair.  Thought for sure I’d win the contest next to all the brunettes.  Stay tuned to see what happens.

My High School friend Carl Hijermind put together these two great pictures.   One of me in a bathing suit and one of us at Toes, standing next to m parents cool gray 1960 T-Bird with his surfboard in the back seat.  I think this captures the spirit of my 1964 Saffrons Rule Diary. We finally broke ground for our new Swimming Pool… Summer of 64

July 20, 1964, Monday. Saw Byron’s car at the beach, but didn’t get to see him.

The Pool Men started our Pool today!!!  Drove the T-Bird to pick up Sandy and go to Toes, Jack was there and it was the first time Sandy and Jack saw each other since they broke up. They didn’t know what to do or say. We played records in Garry’s house, than went to D&W’s. Almost died when I saw Byron’s car. We parked and waited for him to come up. Sandy wanted to leave. I was so sad because I didn’t get to see him. We went to Tito’s, than I took Sandy to work at 5:00 and stayed and tried on clothes until 9:00, until she was done with work. I got some Capri’s and a blouse. Went to her house and hung out for a while.

Only one of my friend’s had a pool, Lauri up the hill, in Blair Hills and our cousin’s Al and Jean in the San Fernando Valley.  My dad had promised us a pool for years and now that  his Maybelline Stock was paying higher dividends we finally broke ground on our new pool.  That was one of the happiest day’s ever in 1964.

My parents had a gun metal gray 1960 T-Bird, with red interior and a great radio.  When they were in the right mood, they let me take it cruising… when that happened, my friends and I hit all the spots where we might make the scene and look cool.

Playing 45’s and record albums was a way to show off your new sounds and keep everyone up on the newest music, which usually meant a stop at the record store on the way home.

It was crazy to shop in one store for 4 hours, but because I tried on everything and talked to all the kids who came in to see Sandy Block, I lounged at “Gossip Central”  the Hub for what was happening  Summer of 64.

Making Prank Calls to a Cute Guy was a way to hear his voice and start a conversation

July 19, 1964, Sunday. Called Byron’s house I think his sister answered.

Another boring day. Went to Pearl’s pool and sat in the boiling sun. so miserable I hated it, my sister Donna came too. Came home and washed my hair. By the way Sal Romero called last night. That BUG! I won’t go out with him again. Stayed home all night. Called Byron’s house, I said I was the wrong number. Called Donna’s friend Teri, I wanted her to call Byron’s house and ask about his truck and sorta bring up my name. Had it all planned, than found out she couldn’t call Or-01014. I was so mad! I guess I’m going t sit home alone all Summer without anyone to love. I guess Byron forgot about me.

Saffrons Rule prank callsMy girlfriends and I would get together and make Prank Calls.  We’d disguise our voice and when we got a guy on the phone, we’d apologize for dialing the wrong number. We tried not to laugh when he said he liked our sexy voice and he spilled the beans about his life. We never got caught and finally realized it was immature and a waste our time being so silly and needy.

Pacific Ocean Park at the Santa Monica Pier in 1964 was part of a Teenager’s California Dream

July 18, 1964, Saturday. Sal called. Can’t stand another sad night. Bryon doesn’t call.

Went to the beach but it was cold, so my sister Donna and her friend Teri and I went to Pacific Ocean Park and ate, then took Teri home. Came home. Granddaddy, his new wife Mary and Nana came to dinner. Pearl, Donna and I went to find this party, but it was a Jr High party so dropped Donna off. Went to look for this party in Westchester. Some boys tried to help us find the party, but no luck. Picked Donna up. Went to another party, but it was crummy. Five more boys told me I was a snob. I don’t care because I’m so unhappy and hate everyone. Pearl and I collected all the coke bottles and left. We made 37 cents. Why can’t I find a boyfriend?

It was right at the Santa Monica Pier and you could go in and buy soft serve ice cream and fun food, before having to pay to go inside the Park.  So, hanging out on the beach all day and going to POP for food was easy. Which was how we liked it in 1964, fun and easy.

I remember going to POP to see Fabian when I was in Jr High School.  The host came right up into the audience and stuck a microphone in our face and asked us what we thought of Fabian.  Of course my friend Lauri and I made a big deal about it, but I wasn’t into him that much, it was just so exciting being on TV.

Saffrons Rule MGM Studios

Sometimes I think just living in LA and being around MGM and Hollywood, gave people an air of snobbery without even realizing it.  Everything was so magical in 1964.  It was like living in a movie with romantic background music constantly playing on the radio.  There was no MTV or videos, to remind us of that era, instead when we hear a song from the 60’s,  we have our memories to remind us of what fun it was being young, beautiful and living the California Dream.

At Culver High if our skirts didn’t touch the ground when we knelt down, we were sent home

July 17, 1964, Friday. Bryon likes someone else, I know (so sad)

My sister Donna stayed home while Pearl, Teri and I went to the beach. It was so cold we went to Pearl’s dad’s apartments and laid b the pool. Came home. Marilyn called and said there was a party up in my hills, “Blair Hills”. She picked me up. The party was called off so we picked up my sister Donna and her friend Teri and went to a couple of parties, than Fosters. Donna and Teri did well. Boys like them. Heard there was a dance in Westchester, so we went, but couldn’t get in because we had pants on. Only skirts allowed. We didn’t care because there were no cars we recognized in the lot. Then I was Byron’s truck and left because come nuts threw an egg at us. When we went back to Bryon’s truck he was gone. I know he doesn’t even like me.

saffrons rule no pants allowed

There actually was a dress code in 1964.  We couldn’t wear pants to school and our skirts had to touch the ground when we got on our knees.  My friends and I were asked to get down on our knees many times and we’d be sent home if our skirts were too short.  However, We’d roll them back up once the interrogation was over and we were free to go.

A guys worst nightmare is being sent to the Friend Zone

July 16, 1964, Thursday. I hate this boring Summer

Pearl and I picked up Teri and my sister Donna and went to Toes. Nobody was there. We laid out for about two hours and than went home. Guy’s from across the street asked me to come swimming, but I said no. Pearl and I went driving all night, but never found any cute boys. We went to all the hangouts but nothing. I can’t stand it anymore. No one likes me. I hate this Summer so much and I think all the Westchester guys hate me. All I want in the whole world is for Byron to ask me out. So I can find out if I really like him.

Or if I should send him to the Friend zone

saffrons rule nice guyI was too picky

Making myself too perfect destroyed my chances of finding a nice guy

Beauty was as much a curse as it is was a blessing.

A nice guy’s worst nightmare is hearing  “But I think of you as just a friend.”

Nice guys are often more comfortable asking out and communicating with women who they feel are more likely to agree to go out with them.

I was too intimidating.  High School guys were afraid of rejection and I didn’t like College guys because they were just after sex.

Weighing and taking my measurements everyday became a habit

July 15, 1964, Wednesday. Losing weight at last.

Went to Lauri’s again and laid in the sun until 4:00. I’m really tan and I’m losing so much weight.  I’m so sad I lost 2 inches in my bust, but happy to have lost 2 inches in my waist and 2 in my hips. Still have to lose in my upper thighs, but sad I’ve lost half an inch in my calves. Stayed home all night. Helped my sister Donna make a Shift. Felt real tired and weak. Finally forced myself to eat dinner. I’m going to the beach tomorrow. I’d give anything to see Byron, but I know I’m not that lucky. Donna and her friend Teri are supposed to go with me. Everyone else is working this Summer. Wish something good would happen to me.

While a lot of my friends worked that Summer, I laid in the sun and was obsessed with my measurements… 36-26-36…  I kept a measuring tape in my makeup bag and if my numbers went up half an inch, it was time to cut calories and step up the exercising.  I was convinced that having a perfect figure guaranteed me a perfect boyfriend and a perfect life.

Cops pull me over, do fake sobriety test and ask us to meet them at Winchell’s Donuts

July 14, 1964, Tuesday. This is such a boring Summer for me.

Laid by Lauri’s pool from 9am to 4pm. Went home and got ready for the Saffron meeting. I weigh 120 lbs. I’ve lost 5 lbs and I can’t eat anything, I just drink Tab-Cokes. Went to the meeting and told them I couldn’t get the script to do a show for the Lions Club. We are doing different things. Left and went to Fosters. Got in the car with Bob Fortenberry. Pearl is going out with him tomorrow. Everyone just looked at me. Left, saw cute Cops and waved at them. They stopped us. I was so scared. They said I looked too young to drive. They just wanted to talk to us. They told us to meet them at Midnight at Winchell’s Donuts. They made Angie walk a straight line to see how tall she was. Pearl and I went to the Wich Stand, Tiny Nailor’s and Robert’s, but no cute boys were there.
