Culver City Centaurs drop to second place after losing to Luezinger

November 13, 1964, Friday.

Pearl and I babysat for my little sister Billee and my brother, Preston. We decided not to go anywhere, because, we’re tired of just driving around looking for boys and it was too cold to go to the Football game, which we lost. Now we’re not in the big league with Westchester High School. We just read and did homework. I’ve got the lead in the Senior school play! Now I have to stay after school everyday until 5:30. It’s called Home Sweet Homicide and it’s a comedy murder mystery. Pearl’s in it too.  I don’t think I’m going to my second audition tomorrow for that acting group we found in the paper. Lyla says it’s a racket and I’m going to try out instead, for The Sound of Music!

I wasn’t a big Football Fan and never had any interest in dating a Football star.  I was a Surfers Rule kind of chick who only cared about being seen on the beach… at cool drive-in restaurants, in my bitchen 57, blue and white, Bel Air Chevy, or at a happening party.  But, I was very disappointed when Culver lost this game and didn’t get to be in the Big League with Westchester High… where all the cool Surfers I dated went to school.

I hoped to be discovered like Lana Turner sitting on a stool at Schwab’s Pharmacy

November 12, 1964, Thursday. Pearl and I saw an ad in the paper about actors wanted and went to an audition. The man seemed very impressed with me. I got all A’s on the test. He could tell I’ve had speech training. We stayed for a second test, then he asked us to come back on Saturday. If we pass the test on Saturday, we could work on any movie set in Hollywood. We had to memorize a script and be tested on a TV set. I was so excited, but Mom was skeptical about it being a racket, because if they accept you, you sign a 7 year contract paying them $5.00 a week for an agent. saffrons rule auditions saffrons rule MGM LOGO Saffrons Rule RKO Pictures Saffrons Rule Desilu Studios saffrons rule schwab's drugstore Since Culver City was the Mega Studio Capital of the world in 1964, with MGM Studios, RKO Pictures, and Desilu Studios, practically down the street from our High School, everyone hoped they might be discovered by a talent scout… saffrons rule lana turner 2 like Lana Turner, sitting on a stool at the counter at Schwab’s Pharmacy. As a World War ll Vet, my Dad received a GI loan that gave him a lifetime of benefits, before the Maybelline Co sold

November 11, 1964, Wednesday. Veterans Day! 19 years since WWll ended.

No school today because of Veterans Day. I slept until noon then did my hair and cleaned the house. Daddy got out of the Veterans Hospital on a pass until 3:00, so, nobody was home. Pearl came over, and it was great until Daddy called to tell me the car had run out of gas and I needed to go to the gas station and bring him a gallon of gas. So we did, then Mom brought Daddy back to the hospital, because he was exhausted and in an irritable mood all day, she said.  He just wanted to get back.

My parents got married in March of 1945, a few days before my dad was shipped overseas to the Philippians.  The War ended 5 months later in August… but being a Vet, my dad received wonderful benefits… including the GI loan, which bought our first little house in Culver City;  Put my parents in the Dry Cleaning business for 12 years, until 1960;  Paid for my dad to go to Woodberry College in Los Angeles, where he worked on an Interior Design degree; and most of all gave him lifetime access to the Veterans Hospital.

Had to go to MGM Studio and borrow $2.00 from Granddaddy for gas and a show

November 10, 1964, Tuesday.

It was a crummy day. It rained so hard we had to stay on campus for lunch. After school my sister Donna and I went to Pearls, then I had to meet granddaddy at the gate at MGM Studio to get $2.00 for gas and a show. Mom was in such a terrible mood she wouldn’t come out of her room, or give me any money. Went back to Pearls and ate over. Then we picked up Sandy and went to the show. Saw Viva Las Vegas and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. They were so bitchen!! We saw Phil, but nobody else was there. After that, we drove to UCLA, then back to to Tiny Nailor’s in Westchester. Bob was there so were these two guys we took to a party.

When I saw Debbie Reynolds as Molly Brown I knew I was going to be just like her.  I loved her unsinkable Spirit and her drive to overcome and succeed no matter what life dished out. She was an inspiration to me.

Ultra Lash Mascara is about to send our Maybelline Stock off the charts.

November 9, 1964, Tried out for a play, but I don’t think I want the part

Angie’s so two-faced! I’m so mad at her! She told everyone that Pearl and I came to the Saffron Pledge party two weird boys. She had to make fools of us, but, I don’t really care because at least I didn’t have to pay $5.00 for not having a date! It poured all day. I wore my hair in a new way and everyone loved it. I’m going to wear it this way for a while. After school I went to try out for the school Play. Think they want me to play the flirt or the actress, but I don’t think I’ll take it, because the parts are so small. Pearl, my sister Donna and I went to see Daddy at the Veterans Hospital. He looks bad!

Working for $1.25 an hour only to get a ticket from Cops who want my phone number.

November 7, 1964, Saturday.

Forgot to tell you, yesterday my sister Donna left my car radio on all day and after school the battery was dead. The school had to recharge it, but it died when I turned it off. Sandy, Dianne and I started work today at Jack’s Ranch Market. We take the grocery’s out of the baskets. We worked 6 hours today, standing on our feet the whole time. When I came home I got dressed and Pearl picked me up. We went to Hermosa Beach and met two boys and asked if they would come to the Saffron party with us. On the way we got a ticket. The Police made us line up against the fence, because we had beer in the car. We weren’t drinking, but the boys were. The Police made one boy open the beer with his teeth and pour it out, then asked Pearl and me for our numbers. Pearl gave a false name. We got to the Saffron party at 11:00 and it was over, but Angie Kamola made us stay for a half hour and eat.

Standing on my feet emptying baskets for 6 hours at $1.25 an hour, I made $7.50, but with withholding tax etc, I probably made $7.00 …and have to do it again tomorrow!

It wasn’t bad enough standing on my feet all day for $7.00, but getting a big fat ticket will cost that much if not more, and all of this just so I didn’t have to pay $5.00 for not having a date to take to the Saffron Pledge party

Having to give my drivers license to the Cop and have him run it was very upsetting.  But the fact he liked my picture and wanted to call me was even worse.

November 8, 1964, Sunday.

My sister Donna didn’t come home last night. My mom called the Police Station and Jeff and Linda K. at 4:00 in the morning. Donna stayed at Linda K. and never called home. I had to go to work again today!!! But after, went to Pearls, then Sandy’s.

If Culver City High’s Football Team wins next week, we’ll be in the LEAGUE! (Be True To Your School… Beach Boys)

November 6, 1964. Friday Went to the Football game with Sandy, Dianne, Pearl, Edna and Cheryl Nickles. We played at Morningside. We won 14-7. We’ve won every game so far. Next week if we win, we’ll be in the League! After the game we went to Fosters. It was packed. Pearl and I have to find somebody to take to the Saffron Pledge party, so we won’t have to pay $5.00.  Dale Hansmen tried to apologize to me for telling Marilyn and starting a fight between us, but she wouldn’t let him talk to me. Doug Thompson asked me, who I was taking to the party, I said do you want to go, but, he said he had a date. We cruised up to Tiny Nailor’s in Westchester, but nobody was there.

Once a Best Friend starts Going Steady with a boy, you can kiss her goodbye

November 5, 1964, Thursday.

It was scary to come back to school after being absent for 8 day. I was tired, because I didn’t go to bed until past Midnight. Dale called Marilyn last night and told her what I said! She was never so mad at me. She told me to mind my own business. I really didn’t care, but, I told her I was sorry, because I didn’t mean to cause her any trouble with him. By the end of the day we were halfway friends. We have o go to the Pledge party or pay $5.00. I’m not going. I don’t have anyone to ask, but I won’t pay either.

Marilyn and I had been the best friends before she started going steady with Dale Hansmen.  After that she wasn’t as available to hang out, because Dale had her on a short chain, so to speak.  He always came first over Saffrons, school or even her best friends.

Sharrie High School Play 1965 003

I was never like that.  My girlfriends and Saffrons always trumped any guy I was dating.  Some girls are girlfriend types and some are boyfriend types.  I always had a ton of girlfriends…guys would come and go… but my loyalty to my friends came first.  Today, I still have my original best friends from Jr High and High School and see them often.

I should never have talked behind my friend’s back to her boyfriend.

November 4, 1964, Wednesday. Well day!!

I still didn’t go t school, stayed home, but felt better. Just watched TV and went swimming. I picked up my sisters Donna and Billee from school. Donna asked Jeff Hansmen to the Pledge party. I talked to Dale Hansmen, his brother. I told him I didn’t blame him and I was on his side, because Marilyn acts so wild at school and she said she had him wrapped around her little finger. Pearl came over. She called Howard my old boyfriend and asked him to the Pledge party, but he had a date. She said she wanted Bob’s number for me. I didn’t call him. Went to see Daddy at the Veterans Hospital, then Mom and I went out to dinner.

saffrons rule marilyn and Dale PromI suppose I was a little jealous, because I liked Dale Hansmen ever since I was 15 and danced slow with him Bonnie Cavaliere’s Surfer Stomp Party.  I thought he liked me too, but Marilyn scooped him up.

This isn’t a good picture of Marilyn, because she was really cute with a dynamite figure in a bikini.  We were best friends and she was President of Saffrons, but, ever since she borrowed my orange bikini and lost it, I was upset with her.  Marilyn was a big flirt and guys flocked around her, but, Marilyn and Dale remained quite an item.

Dale was a a couple grades ahead of us and was a top Surfer at Culver.  He hung out with the most bitchen guys ever and could get any girl he wanted… and he wanted Marilyn!!

I pray to God, that if my daddy get’s well I will always be good to him!

October 24, 1964, Saturday. Sick…Ben and Ann Benson came by

Woke up real sick today. I couldn’t go to the Pledge Car Wash. I went to the pool, but threw-up, so went to bed. Mary and Granddaddy came over, so did Ben and Ann wit their daughter Chris. I forced myself to get up and get dressed. Pearl came over and we all went swimming. Tonight Ben got drunk and was very loud and crude. I came in and went right to bed. Chis stayed all night. Ben brought a lot of flash lights to give us, and a car for my 4 year old brother, Preston.

October 25, 1964, Sunday. Sick…Stayed in bed all day. Linda Klein came over, so did Nana. Chris went home tonight.

October 26, 1964, Monday. Sick.

October 27, 1964, Tuesday. I’ve known Howard two years. Met him when I was 15 at a Monster Mash dance. (Ronald Reagan speaks on Goldwater’s behalf.)

A funny thing happened tonight. Al Walker called. He’s the one I met when I met Howard. They were at the dance together. It’s funny because it’s our anniversary today. It’s two years today. Al asked me out for this weekend. I said I would go if wasn’t sick, but I knew I’d be sick. I told Al about the time Howard came over and expected me to go out with him and how I stayed in the bathroom until he left. He cant wait to chop Howard about how I hung him up..

Daddy’s getting sick. We are real worried about him. He’s going to have to go to the hospital for tests. We’re afraid it could be his heart infection again (Endocarditis,) I went to Nana’s to get well.

November 2, 1964, Monday. Daddy’s in the Hospital!

Daddy went to the Veterans Hospital today. He’s very sick. His temperature is 102 degrees and he is freezing cold. I’m so worried about him. I promise God, that if he gets well I’ll always be good to him like Sandy and Diane Block are to their parents. He’s going to have to stay at the Hospital for 10 days at least for different tests.

 November 3, 1964, Wednesday

Can’t stand staying in the house, I’m so restless. Nana went to see Daddy and Mom picked me up from Nana’s apartment. I came home to get ready for school tomorrow. Mom went to see Daddy.

Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of your heart (endocardium).

Endocarditis typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in your heart. Left untreated, endocarditis can damage or destroy your heart valves and can lead to life-threatening complications. Treatments for endocarditis include antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery.

Endocarditis is uncommon in people with healthy hearts. People at greatest risk of endocarditis have a damaged heart valve, an artificial heart valve or other heart defects.
