Cruised the Revelaire Club in Redondo Beach to check out the Crossfires band and Mark Volman

October 2, 1964, Friday.

Tonight didn’t go to Culver’s football game, instead, Pearl, Sandy and I went to Westchester’s game, then cruised Toes in Playa del Rey.  Westchester won University (Uni) 14 – 7, we won Lennox, 7 – 0. After the game all the kids went to Tiny Nailor’s in Westchester, so we did too. We saw Howard with 5 guys in the car turning the corner. He saw us too. He yelled something that sounded something like “park the that car.” I don’t know if he knew it was me or not. He wasn’t at Tiny Naylor’s, but we did see Jack. Sandy didn’t want to talk to him so we ate inside. We cruised some parties in Hermosa Beach, but, no good, so we left and drove to Redondo Beach, to the Revelaire Club to see the Crossfires, but there were no cute boys, so just drove around and wound up at Fosters in Culver City.

The Crossfires, were a Southern California Surf instrumental Band, (who eventually became, The Turtles.)  They were the house band at the Revelaire Club in Redondo Beach,  and  friends with Howard Gertz and Byron Ferguson, (the guy I liked who was the drummer in the Marauders.) The Crossfires did skits, wore costumes and performed flamboyant rhythm and blues songs with gritty saxophone to go along with the surf instrumentals in its repertoire. Its leaders were Mark Volman,  (Howard”s good friend) and Howard Kaylan

Being asked to do the most humiliating things during Saffrons Hell Week was Tradition

October 1, 1964, Thursday.

The Jaketts tried to be halfway friendly today. We couldn’t pledge the girls, Marilyn Collier, President, said, but we did anyway. Marilyn looked so sloppy today, actually everyday, but, today topped it them all. She looked so cheap! Everybody notices it too. After school there was a meeting to decide the pledge rules. We’re making them wear red lipstick, long skirts and socks. They also have to carry a lunch pail, instead of a purse and a necklace make of safety pins. Their hair has to look perfect all week, but they can’t wear eye makeup or have their hair pulled back. I was so tired tonight I went to bed at 6:00

saffrons rule hell weekHell week had been so miserable for me and I felt bad my sister Donna and her friends were in for torture now they were accepted into Saffrons.  But Tradition was Tradition!!
saffrons rule hell week 3For a whole week before Hell Night, a new Saffron Pledge was expected to do anything a Senior or Junior Saffron asked of them.  If they were asked to get on their knees and tie someones shoes, they had to drop on the spot and honor the request.  It was embarrassing for them to look ugly for a week or be picked up and driven to some popular boy’s house and forced to knock on the door to ask him out.  Some people wanted to quit, but never did.

Like being an Airline Stewardess in 1964, a Saffron had to sign a contract to lose weight

September 30, 1964, Wednesday.

All the new girls ate lunch with the Saffrons. The Jaketts were so mad they wouldn’t even talk to us. We got the dirtiest looks and comments. They called us underhanded and said it wasn’t fair of us to take all the girls before they had their tea. We just shook it off. We got all the girls they wanted, now nobody good will be in their club. “Saffrons” is the best club at Culver City High School, this year and they know it. We pledged the girls already and they loved it. Linda Klein signed a contract to loose 20 lbs before pledging is over. She won’t get her Saffron Sweatshirt until she does. After school we went to Jack’s Ranch Market. Sandy, Dianne and I can’t start working there being Box-Girls, until the food strike is over.

I guess we were considered a snobby, elitist girls club, that only wanted beauty Queens, or a Disney Princess type to pledge.  If a girl didn’t meet the Saffron criteria, they had to sign a contract promising to lose weight before donning the coveted Orange and White Saffron sweatshirt.  I fought to get all the girls in, but they had to work hard to earn our respect and admiration.

I fought, kicked and screamed for all the Saffron hopefuls to make it into the club

September 19, 1964, Tuesday. Decided on our pledges.

The girls were all scared about tonight. But, they were extra sweet to us today. After school we went to Woodies for dinner. At the Saffron meeting, all the girls were so afraid of going into the room where we asked them questions. We didn’t ask anything bad, but some girls were so nervous, they started to cry.  After it was over, we took them home and came back to vote on who we wanted in the club. All the Sophomores made it, except Dianne Spewak. I was so upset I cried and screamed. We fought all night. They said if she gets in they all should. But, we couldn’t do that! So we were going to drop Linda Klein too. But, I couldn’t see her get hurt!  After about an hour I won!!  We took all the Sophomores, then we called them.  It was great hearing them scream, they were so happy, especially Linda Klein.  She got the break that would change the direction of her life, she would have respect now.

It’s sad chosing which Saffron hopeful makes the cut

September 28, 1964, Monday. Saffron Tea…

The Saffron hopefuls were so excited, but the one’s who didn’t get an ask back after the tea were sad. I felt so bad, because I know how they feel. I didn’t make it the first time. We went off campus today. It was soooo bitchen to just leave school and go out to lunch. After school I went shopping with Lauri. We drove to Wilshire in her new red Corvair. She got it from her grandparents on her Birthday last Friday. When I came home I didn’t do anything all night. I’m so scared about tomorrow. We have to choose the girls we want in the club. I can’t stand to see any of them hurt. I wish we could take all of them I just love Saffrons. I’m going to hate to leave next year.

I wrote and performed my Play… “Walking Ugly”… for the Saffron Tea.

September 27, 1964, Sunday.  Beach Boys on Ed Sullivan Show tonight. (Warren Commission report released…Oswald acted alone.)

Went to Sandy Block’s house.  I wore a Black Sheath.  The yard looked so bitchen, I couldn’t believe it!  We picked up the girls invited to the Tea.  We had a band play and gave everyone party favors.  The girl’s were so scared , but said the Tea was so great!  The whole thing was a success!  Even the entertainment worked out beautifully for no rehearsal.  I did my version of Sleeping Beauty, called Walking Ugly, but this time I had everyone act it out.  The girl’s laughed so hard I almost died.  We’re going to do it for the whole school.  The whole day was great!  All the girls we wanted in the club signed up.  We voted for the one’s to be invited back to the next meeting.  I delivered the letters by hand.  I went to Sandy’s for her Grandfather’s Birthday and all her relatives were there.  I felt uncomfortable.

I started writing and performing when I was 15 and out of that desire to entertain, I wrote The Maybelline Story and today perform it live… showing vintage Maybelline ads and Maybelline family photos for Clubs and Organizations…  Once the desire to be on stage was planted, it grew over the years into a beautiful garden.

I had a fit and locked myself in the bathroom until he finally gave up and left.

September 26, 1964, Saturday. Howard pulled the trick of the year on me…I hate him!

Decorated for the Saffron Tea all day. Tried to make it look like a Jungle. It looked ugly to us, but we left anyway. When we got to Sandy’s, Howard called and said, I was going to the dance with him, as if I was expecting him to call. I wouldn’t talk to him. Sandy and I went shopping, but when we got back, Howard was there. I ran into the bathroom and locked the door, refusing to talk to him. Sandy told him I wouldn’t see him, but he wouldn’t leave. He actually expected me to go to a party with him, but, I wouldn’t come out. Sandy said to him, “I don’t blame her, after all the things you said about her.” He was never so mad, his face turned red and he said they were all just rumors. He left so humiliated. I hate him..who could he actually think I’d go out with him at the last minute. We made sandwiches for the Tea all night.

Tried to make the Saffron a Jungle theme, but I was so upset I couldn’t get my heart into it.  Also I was the Club Entertainer and had a lot of pressure on me to come up with a great performance by tomorrow.

Howard and I met when I was 15 and he was 19.  We tried to make it work, but my parents hated him and after going around and around for two years, I hated him too.  I guess the problem was I was under age and wouldn’t sleep with him, but he wouldn’t give up.  I finally just wanted him to go away.

First Football game of Culver City High School’s 1964 Season… Culver won Bishop 26 – 0.

September 25,1964, Friday.

Went to the first Football game of the Season with Sandy, Edna and Pearl, but didn’t feel like staying, so we went back to Pearl and watched TV until it was over. We won Bishop 26 – 0. Sandy and Edna went to the dance until 11:00, then we all went to Tiny Nailor’s.  Saw Kieth Turner and Niles, than cruised down to the Flying Jib and saw Doug. He talked to Sandy a long time. I got real sick and almost passed out. It was a headache so bad I couldn’t see. I almost didn’t make it home. Then I threw up and felt better. I guess I was sick because I ate so much after not eating all week…or sleeping either.

I was never interested in Football, just liked to cruise through the stands to see who was there and if there was nobody I cared about, I wanted to leave.  I never got into the game.

Merry-go-round with Howard starts up again. Beatles… “I never want to see you again.”

September 22, 1964, Tuesday. Howard has been lying about me to everyone.

Today we got our Senior passes, but I didn’t get mine until after school.   I went shopping than met everyone at Woodies for dinner. Pearl told me Bob (the boy she met at the dance,) picked her up after school and told her he knew I still liked Howard, because they’re good friends… Howard told him a bunch of lies about me… I hate him!!!  He’s doubling with Pearl and Bob Saturday. Howard tells everyone I still like him. Went to the Saffron meeting, the Saffron Tea is Sunday and we still have so much to do. The Jaketts invited the same girls to their Tea. I have to Entertain everyone and I’m not ready at all. Pearl wanted to go to Tiny Nailors to see Bob, so we went, but I never want to see Howard Gertz again.

May have a job at Jack’s Ranch Market in Culver City for $25.00 a week.

September 21, 1964, Monday. I maybe have a job as a box girl!!!

Everyone noticed my hair being so light. Some liked it, but most wanted me to change it back. So after school we all went to Linda Klein’s parent’s beauty supply store. I’m doing my hair Champagne Toast…Silver Blond. I bet my hair is going to fall out. Came home and than had to pick up my little sister Billee from school.  I was two hours late and she had to sit and wait for me. I just stayed home tonight. I’m on a diet again. Now I weigh 120 lbs, but I want to lose 5 more, because there’s a Miss Auto Contest and the winner gets a $100.00 wardrobe. I’m scared to enter it after what happened at the Miss Culver City Contest. Sandy, Dianne Block and I are supposed to work at Jack’s Ranch Market in Culver City as box boys on Saturday and Sunday, for $25.00 a week.

Saffrons rule mod barbieChampagne-Barbie was the look I was going for, but it would mean conditioning my hair with a plastic cap over my head and sitting under my portable hair dryer for hours.

saffrons rule hair dryerI loved sitting under a warm hair dryer, with conditioner or curlers in my hair.  It gave me time to polish my long nails and wait for the mud pack to dry on my face.  The bad part was I couldn’t talk on the phone.

Lucky's Market in Boulder

This is a pretty good representation of the kind of Box Girl, Sandy, Dianne and I would make.  But for $25.00 a week, just working two days, could buy us a cool outfit every week.
