Standing at the crossroads…Will it be a Career or Love.

May 14, 1964, Thursday. Dave finally called.

Got home after school, looked ugly. My face is all broken out. Got dressed to go for my audition, but, Mommy didn’t come home, she was at Jean Williams, who just came home from the Hospital. I had to call the school and cancel my appointment. Was glad! Dave called, finally we are going out Saturday. He told me he was taking Sandy Block and Jack was taking me. He was serious. I wouldn’t really mind. Dave really sounded like he liked me. He’s coming over tomorrow night, because he doesn’t want to go and drink. I just love him. I don’t know what I ever saw in Howard. UGGG!

May 13, 1964, Wednesday. Got an audition with Jean Louis

Sandy Block said Dave was going to ask me out for Saturday and we’re doubling with her and Jack. But he hasn’t even called. I wonder what’s wrong with him. After school, Donna and I went to Modeling School and took Wardrobe and make-up classes. After class I talked to Mr. Fortier the head of the Patricia Stevens Modeling School. He’s bitchen! I told him I wanted to be an actress and he made an appointment for me to see Jean Louis tomorrow at 5:30. It will be an audition. Now I’m really scared and besides I’ll look ugly, because I just washed my hair. I sure hope I do good.

I wanted to be an actress, but that meant more dieting, memorizing scripts and auditioning, if I was going to get serious about a career.  It wasn’t just about being cute and fixing my hair,

it was about becoming a real Shakespearean Thespian and working hard for the first time in my life. The struggle with that dream was cutting back on my social life the beach and boys.  That was a conflict for me in 1964.

Shopping for an Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

May 12, 1964, Tuesday. Bitchen night. Dave was mad because I didn’t talk to him. After school Marilyn and I went to “Tops and Bottoms.” We looked at bathing suits. She looked so good in them because she’s lost so much weight. We always weighed the same, but now I’m fatter. The Saffron meeting was at my house. We talked about the Saffron party. I’m taking Dave. We went to Fosters and Dave, Jack Phil and all the other guys were there. Dave looked so cute. I looked good too. We all sat in Lew’s car and listened to records. When they left, Dave was mad because he said I paid more attention to Phil than him. But, I said “don’t be mad.”

Guy’s don’t like competition, they want to be #1 in their girl’s life.

May 10, 1964, Monday. Jack calls but Dave doesn’t

I did my Play review, wasn’t too good, I could have done so much better. Doing it Thursday for another class. After school Donna and I went to Modeling. We did figure and visual poise. I find it hard to walk right. I sure hope I improve. And, I’m so fat I hate myself. When I came home Jack called for the third time. He’s so cute, he answers saying, “Hi Buddy.” I think I like him more than Dave, who didn’t even call me and I bet he was over at Jacks. He’s so funny/strange, I can’t tell if he likes me or not.… He probably likes Marilyn Collier better. She looks so good after losing 13 pounds.

Maybe the issue was, Dave didn’t know where he stood with me.  I was nice to him, but he was aware I flirted with all the guys.  I bet he was testing me by having Jack call to see if I’d go out with his friend.  Could it be he was going after my friend Marilyn to make me jealous.  He didn’t like the whole Modeling thing.  Guy’s don’t like competition, they want to be #1.

Living two lives….one with my friends and one with my family

May 10, 1964, Sunday. Sure hope Dave still likes me. Mothers Day.

Was so uncomfortable sleeping at Lauri’s. Didn’t hardly sleep at all in her bed with Snowball her cat, which I’m allergic to. Mommy was still hurt from last Friday after I was so mean to her. I went home about 11:00. I wanted to go to the beach, but decided to stay home for Mothers Day. I’m so scared to go to school tomorrow. I’m still not ready with my Play Review. Felt sad today, it was such a wasted weekend and I don’t think Dave wants to go out with me and we’re supposed to double with Jack and Sandy Block next week. But, Jack said he would talk to Dave. Dave is sorta weird. He doesn’t pay any attention to me unless he wants to.

Looking back now, I can see that Dave and I had nothing in common and he just wasn’t that into me.  He was too laid back to deal with my high maintenance Drama.  He loved the Ocean and Surfing …and wasn’t a big party animal like me.  But, it was hard letting him go, because he was so cute and I liked being seen with him.

I needed to stay home for once and try and make amends to my Mother after throwing my shoes at her and saying terrible things… just because she made me stay home and babysit Friday night.  I felt like I was living two lives….one with my friends and one with my family.  I wish I could have been a better teenage daughter.

It gave me a RUSH to tell secrets, but it got me in a lot trouble.

May 9,1964, Saturday. I could like Jack as a boyfriend.

Got up at 9:00 to go to the beach and see what was the matter with Dave. Bonnie Cavaliere came with me. Jack was there, he didn’t break up with Linda. Says he will tomorrow. Everyone was mad because I started to tell Jack that Sandy Block was still going with Richard Cavaliere, so I quickly shut up. Now Jack’s mad at me for leaving him hanging. Dave acted mad at me. Hardly talked to me. Howard came, he’s going out with his old girlfriend Deanne. She’s Jewish too, probable better for him than me. Greg told me all the lies Howard said about me. That I loved him so much I’d let him do anything to me. I hate him so much. I didn’t do that much with him, he’s just bragging to show off. Stayed all night at Lauri’s. Greg, Mike and Jack came over. So mad Dave didn’t come. I really like Jack a lot.

While I’m fighting with my mother, Maybelline’s Ultra Lash explodes on the Teen Market in 1964

May 8, 1964, Friday. Was so mad at Dave and Mommy I couldn’t stand it.

Well I didn’t go to school. Told Marilyn I’d come about noon, but slept until 11:30, so stayed home all day and worked on my Play review. Got a letter from Unk Ile thanking me for asking all my friends if they liked Maybelline’s Liquid Eyeliner.  He said it gave him more perspective on the Teen market.  When Lauri came home from school, I went Ice Skating with her, but didn’t skate, instead I did exercises in the “head.”  Mommy called me at the Skating Rink and said it was an emergency. All it was, was she wanted me to come home and babysit, so they could go out. I was so mad when I got home, I started crying and throwing my shoes at her. I said some terrible things, then I felt so sorry, because I made her feel so bad. At 10:00 Dave called and wanted me to come to Dan’s, (after he told me he wasn’t going, and asked me not to go.) When I said I couldn’t go he got mad and hung up on me.

My great uncle Tom Lyle Williams, (Unk Ile,)  founder and owner of the Maybelline Company from 1915 to 1968 was introducing a new line of Maybelline products to the Teen Market in 1964 …. right after Ultra Lash was born that year.  Here is one of the Teen commercial that came out of my little girlfriend Poll, that let him know how crazy we all were about Ultra Lash Mascara and  Ultra liquid Eyeliner.

Maybelline Ultra Lash was born in 1964 and was the product that sent Maybelline’s profit’s off the charts.

Every girl I knew carried Maybelline Black Liquid-Eyeliner in her purse and wanted to look like Jean Shrimpton in 1964.

Bondage to the Media’s Ideal image, caused my dieting Neurosis (“invisible injury”)

May 7, 1964, Thursday. Dave and I must really like each other, because we fight all the time.

After school I came home and decided to really go on a diet, because Marilyn lost 13 lbs and looks so good. I’ve been doing exercises. I took my measurements and wrote down how much I want to take off 10 lbs. Dave called. We always fight. He got mad because I wanted to go to Don’s party tomorrow night. He can’t go because it’s his Mom’s Birthday, so I promised I wouldn’t go. Lauri came over and told me there was a party in Ladera Heights, so I’ll probably go with her. My play review is do tomorrow and I’m not half way ready, I worked on it from 5:00 to 12:00. I’m not going to school tomorrow.

I’ve got to lose 10 lbs. I weigh 128 lbs. Why am I gaining weight.

May 6, 1964, Wednesday.

Dave told me he wasn’t taking me to Don’s party Friday, because he wants to drink and I don’t like him to. So, I probably won’t see him this weekend. I’m going to stay at Lauri’s if I don’t go out. We went modeling tonight. We changed schools and now go to Patricia Stevens on Wilshire Boulevard (so much closer to home.)  It was tough, we had a speech class, I showed how I do my hair. Than we had a figure class and we started Fencing. It’s going to firm up my legs. I came home and had to wash my hair. Dave didn’t call, I wonder if he still likes me or Marilyn now. Pam Henderson told Donna he said he really liked me a lot.

I actually demonstrated how to style my hair in my speech class at school as well and got an A, since I was an expert on teasing and styling big hair in 1964

The secret was in the comb.  Imagine combing this rats nest out every night, setting it in super big curlers and then sleeping on them.

But of course the the magic was in the hairspray.  I went through a can a week

I knew it was only a matter of time before my boyfriend dumped me for one of my best friends

May 5, 1964, Tuesday. Saffron Club Night. I can’t stand the way Marilyn flirts with Dave.

After school I came home and worked on my play review. Went to Saffron Meeting. We got two Saffrons in Pep Squad this year. Sandy Block didn’t make it. She wanted it so bad too. But Sandy Quartie and Lynn Sperie made Pom-Pom girls. Marilyn is having a Saffron party at her house, couples only. I’m asking Dave. Went to Fosters, but, Dave and Jack never came because some boy hung them up. So, Marilyn, Jacky and I went up to Jacks. Dave was there and Marilyn flirted with him so much. I hated her. She made a fool of herself by doing exercises and cheers, then wrestled with Jackie and hurt her arm. She started crying and Dave seemed really worried.

Marilyn had just lost 10 lbs and looked fantastic.  I was jealous, because I’d gained weight and felt fat.  She was in the spotlight putting on a show.

But, when she started jumping up and down showing off her big boobs, I was furious and couldn’t believe her nerve.  So much for the Boyfriend Code of Ethics.

More of a Guy’s Girl, a Tom-Boy type, Uninhibited and Free Spirited, Marilyn was a real turn on.  I knew it was only a matter of time before Dave put the moves on her.
