Only interested in meeting cute boys, I don’t know how to ski. I don’t think I will learn either, I don’t want to get wrecked.

February 24, 1964, Monday, Howard hasn’t called in a week. Can’t wait until Saturday. Going to meet someone better. (Wish he would call.)

Drove to school, it was such a drag, until Edna thought of going to the snow. I thought it was a great idea. I told her I could drive. We decided to take Bonnie, Angie, Marilyn, Linda, Edna and me. We wanted to go Saturday night and stay all night in a cabin without a chaperone. It would be “too great.” Everyone says there are millions of darling boys. I want to meet one and forget Howard. By the way, Cristy Carlson said she met Howie. He said he knew some kids from Culver. He named me first. I told her he’s been going with me for two years. (I loved it!)  Well anyway, we’re bringing food and skis. I don’t know how to ski. I don’t think I will learn either, I don’t want to get wrecked. Sure hope he calls so I can tell him we’re going to Surf Films Wed.

I never liked going outside my comfort zone…..Didn’t like it too hot, too cold, too dangerous.  So never learned to ski, water ski, snowboard, surf, skydive or any extreme sports so to speak.  Just wanted to look cute and sit by the fireplace with my guy.

Nope, you could always find me sitting by the fireplace in the Ski Lodge with my guy. Nothing could be Sweeter!!

February 23, 1964, Sunday, Everyone thinks I’m engaged because of a ring Daddy found. Fun day, but, Howard didn’t call

Woke up early, so I could go to the the beach. Lauri called so went with her to Toes. We picked up her friend Lynn. Went to Toes – It was so windy out!  I saw Joe. He asked if I was looking for Howard. I said NO! I wish I knew what was with Howard. He hasn’t called in a week and he hasn’t gone to the beach for a week. We then drove to “Station 2.” Lots of kids were there. Including Fred. Fred and I fought all day. Kept chopping each other. He thinks I’m going with Howard. He almost threw me in the water for throwing sand in his face. Marty made a lot over my orange capris, (because he knew Lauri gave them to me.) We made fools of ourselves by singing “We love you Beatles.” On the way home we picked up 3 hitchhikers and drove them all over. Went to Pearls. Did homework. Went to Fosters. Saw a cute boy.

Chop~To cut down verbally. Example: “Man, you’re so ugly, you gotta slip up on a glass to get a drink of water.” (Now that was a “chop”.) NOTE: This translated to “Burn” in the Seventies and onward.

There are three main beaches in Playa Del Rey; Toe’s, sometimes called Toe’s Over Beach, Gillis Beach, and Dockweiler. In the 1950’s and 1960’s; before the Marina Del Rey Breakwater was built, Toe’s Beach was a surfing Mecca.

So all night we drove on the freeway and listened to the radio and talked about what it was like being in the Marines.

February 22, 1964, Saturday, Wasted day and night. Miss Howard. Mad day.

Drove to the beach with Bonnie. Saw Bryan on his motorcycle. He wouldn’t take me for a ride. Howard wasn’t there. In fact no one good was there. Bonnie and I drove to the Valley. Went to Alene’s house. It’s so big and beautiful. Then we went to her cousin Mike’s house and talked. After, we drove to her aunts new store. She bought us hamburgers. Then we went to my uncle Al and aunt Jean’s house. My cousin, Big John was there. Had to take him back with me. We went to dinner. Than to the party with Lauri. Everyone was Jewish. (John didn’t want to stay.) Fred was there. So all night we drove on the freeway and listened to the radio and talked about what it was like being in the Marines. It was horrible. But he’s my cousin from Chicago and I’m supposed to show him a good time in California. I would be embarrassed to be seen with him at the beach. He’s so white, with a shaved head and out of it. But he acts like I’m his girlfriend.

When there was nothing else to do, we could always go up on the roof and gossip.

February 21, 1964, Friday, I’ll see Howard at the beach tomorrow. How should I act…Boring day.

Drove to school. Day seemed to go so slow. Talked about Shelia a lot. After school, drove Marilyn to Dale’s, (her boyfriend.) Then went to Bonnie’s. She wasn’t home, so waited for her. She was at Angie’s. We acted real dumb. We got up on the roof. Edna came over and all four of us were up there. We told the little kids a monster was up there. Bon and I left, went to Fosters, than to Shelia’s. She’s getting fat. She went from 105 lbs to 121 lbs. Came home. Some of Donna’s friends were over. Mom and Dad went out. Howard didn’t call. Think I’m going to a party tomorrow.

Guess I must be the only prude in the crowd. Guess that’s why Howard doesn’t like me

February 19, 1964, Wednesday, Scared day. I guess we’re through again. Went to the beach. I still love him.

Drove to school. When I got there I got the shock of my life. Bonnie told me Laurie Chudnoff’s dad committed suicide. I couldn’t believe it. I knew him since the 5th grade. Everyday it’s something worse. I was so sad all day. Saw Sheila after school. She looked great. Bonnie, Angie and I drove to Howard’s house and examined it. He still Hasn’t called.

February 20, 1964, Thursday, Shocked day. Howard still hasn’t called

Drove to school, (boring day.) After school went to Sheila’s house. She looked great. Had a little stomach. We talked about everything. Her baby is due in July. She’s not going to marry Steve. She’s going to have the baby, then give it up. She’ll come back to school next year. She said she wasn’t drunk when she did it. She did it only once and got pregnant. She say’s Marilyn does it all the time. I can’t believe it. Not Marilyn. She said she could name 7 girls in our crowd who have been to the doctor. I guess I must be the only prude in the crowd. Guess that’s why Howard doesn’t like me. He can’t get enough of me. Left. Went to Pearl’s. She and Jackie are ditching tomorrow and going to the beach. Washed my hair.

Cried myself to sleep listening to Roy Orbinson singing, “Crying.”

February 17, 1964, Monday, (Howard doesn’t like me anymore.)

Went to school, so sad, I don’t think he likes me anymore. He hasn’t called. Went to Nana’s house this morning cause I was late to school. Stayed till 10:00, than drive to the beach. He wasn’t there. So, went to school. Got in new classes. Flunked History and bookkeeping. I’ve done so bad in school cause I’m always sick. Was great to see all my friends. Went in for cheer tryouts after school with Bonnie C. and Angie C.  All the clods were there. Went to Foster’s. Mom and Donna pulled in with a T. Bird Daddy bought. I was so happy. It’s Gray with red insides, (1960.) I drove with Lauri G. to Westchester. Ernie doesn’t work at the store anymore. He moved to Huntington Beach. Cried listening to sad records, because he didn’t call.

Kids from up and down the coast heard about my open party and crashed it.

February 16, 1964, Sunday, Please Howard don’t hurt me.

Uncertain day. Couldn’t decide if I should go to the beach or not. Felt real good. But, didn’t feel like doing my hair. Mom and Dad took Preston to San Juan Capistrano. Dad and I started fighting right away. We just don’t get along anymore. Ever since the Open-Party here last Summer. He can’t forgive me for all the destruction and lack of respect from all the kid’s who crashed the party and stole his sign off the front door. (Bill Williams BOY and Girls.) He started tearing down Howard and my friends. I couldn’t wait until they left. Bonnie Cavaliere came over. Told her I was unsure that Howard and I were still together. I have a strange feeling, after Saturday when he didn’t call. Only time will tell. Went over to her house, than came home. Granddaddy came over and gave us money to go out to eat. Worried about him. He seems so different since Mayme died last year. Scared to go back to school tomorrow. I’ve missed so much it’s really embarrassing to face all my friends every time I’ve been out sick. They don’t understand and I don’t know what to tell them.

Saffrons Party crashers

Kids from up and down the coast heard about my open party and crashed it.  The Police said it was causing a traffic jam and it made the paper.  I was 15 and after the nightmare party, my mother tried to force me to go to Catholic School.  I refused and it created a cold War.  That and the fact they hated me dating Howard since I was 15.

Drove the T-Bird to Fosters and to the Saffron meeting. Everyone seems to think we are rich.

February 18, 1964, Tuesday, Club Night, Sad but pretty fun. Cried.

Drove to school. Took Marilyn. Was late, but snuck in. First day of Sophomore Gym. HATED IT. Did Pantomime in Drama, it wasn’t right, have to do it again tomorrow. After school had the car washed. Went to A&W. Then to Jackie’s. Picked up Donna and Linda and went home. Jacky told whole story about Sheila. She’s 4 months pregnant. She quit school. She’s going to give up the baby and marry Steve later. It hurt me so bad, because we are such close friends. When I got home Donna and Dad started bugging me and I really started crying. Howard still hasn’t called. Drove the T-Bird to Fosters and to the Saffron meeting. Everyone seems to think we are rich. Saffron’s gave mom a box of candy for letting us have Hell Night at our house. (Sheila is only sixteen, so young to have a baby.  She told me she never went to bed with Steve. I must get the story from her. I wounder if he forced her in the back of his Woody or what.)

According to my 1964 Diary, If you weren’t in a club, you were a nobody at Culver High

February 15, 1964, Saturday, Well Day, Howard was cold to me

Felt better. Got dressed. Marilyn Collier called. Heard all the rumors. They say Shelia is pregnant. I don’t believe it. Larry Long and Charlotte Tarzy are going steady. I can’t believe it. He’s such a Soch and she’s a nobody. Not even in a club!!!   I picked up Marilyn and went to Toes. Saw Howard. Stayed with him for two hours. He cut his hair. I didn’t like it. He looked like a little boy. Marilyn acted real dumb. I don’t think he liked me as much for some reason. When I left he said he would call about going out tonight. But he didn’t call. I think he had a cold. He can’t drive, but still, he should call. I should be mad. (Oh God please don’t let it happen.)

Sick again, Nana gave me some pills to sleep. Something she takes. It helped, but I woke up in pain. Why must I always get sick?

Saffrons rule sick

February 2, 1964, Sick day. God don’t let me be sick this week!

Felt sick today. So worried I’ll be too sick to go out with Howard next week. I’ll kill myself if I can’t. I threw up. Stayed in bed all day. Didn’t eat. Just kept calling out, HOWARD.

February 3, 1964, Monday, Sick Day.

Was sick all day. Didn’t go to school. Was real sad cause today was starting of new semester. Didn’t throw up surprisingly enough. Just kept thinking about Howard. He’s going to call me Wednesday. I’ve got to be well by then. I’ll die if I’m not. We’re going to an Inglewood High School dance Saturday. Lou and his brother’s band is playing. Also we’re going to see Surf Films of Howard. He said he might have to work Saturday, but he said he wouldn’t. My waist is real sore where he picked me up. Don’t know if I can stand not hearing from him until Wednesday. Miss him so much, I wish I could be with him all the time.
