A little Black Baby Doll, for my Saffron friend’s Sweet 16

September 20, 1964, Sunday. Dianne Block’s Sweet 16 Party.

I almost didn’t get to go because mom and dad are in terrible moods. They didn’t want me to use my car today, or all week. Mom is like she use to be…vicious! Donna and I gave Dianne a colored Baby Doll, because her club name is “Buckwheat” and she loved it!. The party was at her grandmother’s house. All her Jewish relatives were there. Sandy said she saw Howard last night and he’s not engaged! Vicki Varlatta saw Dave at Manhattan Beach. I was sitting at home last night while all the fun was happening. Tonight I made a pink skirt from a Simplicity Pattern, on the Singer Sewing Machine. My favorite song is “Baby Love.” I cry when I hear it because I think of Byron.

We all adored “The Little Rascals” and Buckwheat was Dianne Block’s Club name, because she had the darkest tan of anyone.  Mine was Barbie Doll, because of all my clothes and my long ponytail.

So angry at my mother, I stripped my hair almost white

September 19, 1964,Saturday. Stripped my hair

Slept until 2:00 in the afternoon. Mommy was in the worst mood. She wouldn’t let us leave the house and we got in a big fight. I told her off again and started crying. Plus my cold was twice as bad. Nobody recognizes my voice. I didn’t get to buy Dianne Block a present for her Birthday tomorrow. Don’t know what I’ll do. Then, tonight I was supposed to go to a bunch of parties with Sandy, Dianne and Pearl, but Mom still wouldn’t let me out. I almost hated her, but she doesn’t feel food either. So, tonight I made my sister Donna an invitation to the Saffron Tea, then I stripped my hair, but it’s so light now, I wish I hadn’t done it, it’s kind of yellow. Oh well, I’ll see how it looks tomorrow in the daylight.

Big year for Celebrity Weddings, but I cried during my 16 year old friend’s Nuptials

September 18, 1964. Friday. Some boy told me Howard is engaged. “What a Joke!” I only care about Byron now.

Didn’t go to school today because of Shelia’s Wedding. Pearl came too. It was so sad I cried. Steve and Shelia looked like two little kids. After we all went to Shelia’s house for a reception. I really ate a lot! We gave her silver leaf glasses. 4 High School girls there, were married and had babies. We left, but didn’t go back to school. Instead we went back to Nana’s apartment and packed up her stuff and moved it into another apartment. I was so sad to leave. It had been the happiest week of my life, with out any bugs around. I came home and got ready to go to the dance in Westchester. Byron’s band the Marauders were playing. I died when I saw him, he’s so cute! But, it’s no use, his girlfriend was thee …She’s so plain!!! I couldn’t believe it!!! I talked to him and Sandy said she thinks he likes me. Neil’s was there, what a doll!!! Ernie was there too…he said he still loves me, but I love Byron!!

Relaxed watching “Bewitched” and “Payton Place”…”Goldfinger” was released today!

September 17, 1964, Thursday. Delivered more invitations

Today in school the girls who received Saffron Tea invitations really kissed up to us. I felt so BIG! Some girls were really hurt, like Donna’s friend Dianne S. and Sharon Bantalon. We voted on inviting Dianne, so after school I made her an invitation, than went to Sandy’s and ate over. Sandy and I have to lose 10 lbs.  I weigh 127. Last year at this time I weighed 117 lbs and I’m 5’4” tall. We delivered the invitations and Sharon started to cry. She was so happy, so was Dianne S. But Pat Brown acted like she didn’t care. We went back to Sandy’s and watched Bewitched and Payton Place. Then I went home.

Everyone knows these shows today, but in 1964 when they first debuted they were cutting edge and so much fun to watch. There were no pointy hats or missing teeth when it came to beautiful Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and everyone wanted to be a beautiful good Witch. Payton Place was the biggest rage that ever hit high school and we had to be home in time to watch it no matter what, because it was so sexy. But when Goldfinger hit the theater, Wow, it changed the game-plan entirely for 1964 sex appeal..

New batch of Saffron Hopefulls receive hand delivered invitations to join

September 16, Wednesday. Delivered the Saffron Invitations

I didn’t think I’d make it through school today, because I was so sick and tired, from no sleep.  Luckily, we haven’t got any homework yet. It was a Jewish Holiday today, so Sandy, Dianne and Pearl weren’t at school. I went back to Nana’s apartment after school and slept until 6:30… Mom and Dad brought the kids over, but, I had to leave, because tonight the Saffrons deliver the invitations to the tea. It was so fun!. Pearl, Sandy and I, delivered invitations to seven girls. They were so happy and I know just how they feel, because I’ll never forget when it happened to me. Pearl and I went to Tito’s Taco’s so she could eat, then came back to the apartment. Sandy, Dianne and Jaynee were there playing with my little sister and brother. We all went to Fosters, than took Linda Klien her invitation. I took the kids home and mom told me the manager of the apartment called her to complain about all the noise.

First day back at Culver City High School during the Mad Men era

September 15, 1964. Tuesday. Went to parties tonight at UCLA. Byron is still going steady

Well, today was the first day of school. It was fun seeing the whole gang and my teachers seem pretty good… After school I came back to Nana’s apartment, Tonight there are more parties at UCLA, so after the Saffron meeting, Pearl, Marilyn, Ziggy and I went. It was so bitchen! Just like last Saturday. I didn’t feel good though, because I have a cold. Then, I saw Tim from the Marauders and he told me Byron is still going steady. It ruined my whole night. He gave me a card and I carried it it with me all night. They are playing Friday night at Westchester High School… The Frat Boys kept bugging us and said I was very unfriendly. But, I didn’t care. Marilyn slept over and we went to bed at 2:00 even though we had to get up at 6:00. I’m so tired and weak…and so sad about Byron.

Summer with my Best Friend is over, school starts tomorrow

September 14, 1964, Monday. Went shopping for school clothes. Pearl had to go home.

Sad day, Pearl had to go home because school starts tomorrow. Granddaddy gave me $75.00 to get some clothes. I shopped until 7:00 and got seven blouses, two suits and a skirt. I had to come home to get some things… Daddy didn’t want me to go back to Nana’s apartment…but after a big fight I went back and got ready for school. I couldn’t sleep at all!! Just kept waiting for the alarm to go off.   I thought about how wonderful it’s been being here. We had to wash our dishes in the sink, while the other one was making up. Cooking, watching TV in the bedroom, cutting out name tags for the Saffron Tea, getting dressed while playing the radio, eating what ever we wanted and coming home any time at all.

Having no responsibilities in 1964, made it fun pretending to be independent.

September 13, 1964, Sunday Drove to the Valley to go to Bob’s Big Boy, but didn’t find a boy for me.

Slept until 1:00. Pearl had to go home because there was a Saffron work day at her house. I stayed at the apartment and cleaned it up. Some boy from UCLA called Pearl… When she went home, her parents wouldn’t let her leave… but she came back anyway. We went out again tonight, this time there weren’t any parties, so we went to Bob’s in the Valley and had dinner. After that, we just bought ice cream, watched TV at the apartment and went to bed ant 12:30. I Can’t believe how wonderful it is to have our own apartment and be able to come and go as we wish. I’m real sad though, because I just can’t find a boy for me. Wish for Byron so much.

National Lampoon’s “Animal House” was like the night we spent at UCLA’s Frat-Parties

September 12, 1964, Saturday. Got locked out of Nana’s Appartment at 3:30 am. Almost called Howard for help.

Got up and went to the pool. Had to take my little sister and brother, Billee and Preston. Tried to get a tan. Came home to our apartment # 7. Pearl and I ate and took a nap. We got dressed and went to UCLA Frat Parties. You couldn’t believe it! Every house had a band!! Boys were all over the street. They told us how beautiful we were and they loved my long hair. THIS WAS THE BEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR!! It was a world of kids and parties. We went from house to house, but I shook most of the boys off, because I wasn’t interested in them. They called me a snob and everything else. One darling boy, Neal, was so conceited he thought he was a god. Two boys were going to take us to Newport Beach, right on the spot, but Pearl wouldn’t go. We got home at at 2:00 am and couldn’t find the keys to get in the apartment. It was soooo terrible!! We actually tried to sleep in my car, but we froze. We went to Marilyn Collier’s, but she wasn’t home.   At 3:00 am we drove to Howard’s for help. Just when I opened my wallet for a dime to call him, the key fell out!!! So, we went home and snuck up the apartment stairs at 3:30 am. We were so happy to get home, but what an experience. I’ll never forget it!

National Lampoon’s Animal House

Done with Surfers for a while… we were out to snag a College Boy… This was the best day of 1964 for me, until we got locked out of Nana’s apartment at 3:00 in the morning. When I saw Animal House in 1978, I remembered my night at UCLA’s Frat-Parties and realized I had been part of a historical or should I say a historical moment in time.

UCLA’s Fraternity Row was the place to be seen in the Fall of 1964

September 11, 1964. Friday Pearl and I have our own apartment for a week.

Went shopping with Pearl, my sister Donna and her friend Teri Thompson and my little brother Preston. Grandaddy gave us each $20.00 to lay away stuff. I got 4 blouses… Afterwards, Pearl and I went to look at Nana’s apartment and fell in love with it…it’s soooo cute… cant wait to move in. We picked up my car, washed it, moved into the apartment at 3:30, got dressed and went to UCLA fraternity parties. Sooo Great!!! So many boys… Pearl and I felt like Queens. Every boy there liked us, but they thought I was a SNOB! They became bugs after a while, but it was fun. We left and walked up and down Fraternity Row. Boy’s followed us all over, they got pretty rude. I couldn’t find anyone for me. We left and went shopping. I did my hair at 3:00 am and didn’t get to bed until 5:00. Tomorrow night is party night on Fraternity Row.

Being a Senior Saffron in High School now, meant scouring LA for College boys.  We were no longer interested in Culver or Westchester High School boys… so UCLA, became the place to be seen in the Fall of 1964.
